2017-2018 Prospect Showcase: Middle Infield Analysis

On Sunday, September 21st PBR Indiana hosted the 2017-2018 Prospect Showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. Below we analyze the middle infielders that participated in the event.

Ryan Altenberger, SS/2B-MIF, Morton HS (IL), 2017: 5-foot-9, 138 pound middle-infielder ran a 7.34 60 and was 71 across the diamond. Showcased soft hands with a quick exchange. Possesses some athleticism in the field. Offensivley the LHH starts wide and uses a short stride. Shows above average bat speed with a good approach. Gets to extension with good rhythm. Stays balanced. Registered an exit velo of 81 mph.
Jonathon Anderson, 2B/MIF, Roncalli HS, 2017: A 5-foot-9, 165 pound sophomore, he was 62 mph across the diamond. Hands are hard and tends to play on his heels. Ran a 7.82 60. Offensively, starts open and uses a short stride. Hands drop during his load. Gets average use of his lower half. Swing path is long. Pull-side hitter.
Zyon Avery, 2B/MIF, Ben Davis HS, 2018: The 6-foot, 175 pound freshman showcased average hands with a clean exchange. Across the diamond was 69 mph. Needs to improve foot speed. Plays through the baseball well. Switch hitter at the plate. Better from the right-side. Starts in a balanced setup. The load is smooth and uses a short stride. Shows good bat speed with a level path to the ball with some pull-side power.
Corbin Beard, 2B/MIF, Rossville HS, 2019: 5-foot-9, 125 pounds, still young with a small but athletic frame. Actions are still raw, but should improve as he gets older. Hands are currently hard with flat feet. Will need to improve on playing through the baseball, currently fields on his heels. Was 58 mph across the diamond. At the plate starts balanced with little to no load. Stride is short. Swing path is long. Lacks use of the lower half.
Isaiah Davis, SS, Ben Davis HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 148 pound sophomore possesses good athleticism. Ran a 7.06 60. Showcased good hands with fluid feet. 69 mph across the diamond. Plays through the baseball. Offensively, starts closed using a short stride. Level swing path with an overall good approach. Line drive type hitter.
Aaron Ernst, SS, Carmel HS, 2017:The 6-foot, 140 pound sophomore showcased average hands from SS with average feet. Showed the ability to get rid of the baseball. Across the diamond was 71 mph. Ran a 7.46 60. Offensively, starts balanced with a smooth load and short stride. Average use of the lower half with good balance. Hands are quick with a level path to the baseball. Good rhythm throughout. Registered an exit velo of 78 mph.
Jared Flueck, 2B/MIF, Colerain HS (OH), 2017: A 6-foot-1, 150 pound sophomore ran a 7.25 60 and was 71 across the diamond. Defensively, showcased average hands with a clean exchange. Offensively, starts in a balanced setup. Drops hands during the load. Stride is short. Shows some bat speed with an overall good approach. Gets to extension. Pull-side hitter with some pop.
Jonathan Foster, SS, Columbus East HS, 2017: 6-foot, 150 pound sophomore plays on the run with average hands. Long throwing motion from SS. 72 across the diamond. Ran a 7.12 60. At the plate starts balanced. Loads back. Average bat speed with a level path. Occasionally will drive the gaps. Registered an exit velo of 79 mph.
Elliott Jackson, 1B/SS, Daleville HS, 2016: A 5-foot-11, 185 pound Junior, possesses a strong, athletic frame. In the field shows average hands with a strong, accurate arm at 82 mph. Arm action is long and from a high ¾ slot. Projects more as a corner infielder. Offensively, the LHH stats balanced and uses a slight leg kick. Hands are quick but will drop during the load. Finishes one-handed. Registered an exit velo of 82 mph and ran a 7.38 60.
William Kulcher, SS, Crown Point HS, 2017: The 5-foot-9, 160 pound sophomore displayed quick, fluid feet with soft hands. Actions are well above average for a 2017. Accurate, strong arm across the diamond at 74 mph. Runs well, 7.15 60. Offensively, starts balanced with a smooth load and short stride. Possesses quick hands with a short, slightly uphill path to the baseball. Consistently made hard contact producing line drives.
Jack Lang, SS, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 155 pound sophomore possesses an athletic frame. Ran a 7.35 60. Defensively, showcased above average hands with fluid feet and a clean exchange. Plays through the baseball well. Across the diamond was 75 mph. At the plate starts balanced. Arm bars during the load. Swing plane is slightly uphill with quick hands. Line drive type hitter. Finishes one handed.
Blake Malatestinic, 2B/MIF, Cardinal Ritter HS, 2017: The 5-foot-9, 145 pound MIF possesses soft hands with quick feet. Plays through the baseball well with some athleticism. Possesses arm strength across the diamond at 82 mph. Offensively, hits from a slight crouch with a short stride. Load is smooth. Level path to the baseball with fluid rhythm. Makes hard contact producing line drives. Ran a 7.39 60 and registered an exit velo of 73 mph.
Caleb Matthews, 2B/MIF, New Castle HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 148 pound sophomore showcased average hands. Needs to quicken up his feet and exchange. Plays through the baseball well. Across the diamond was 74 mph. Offensively, starts tall and open. Arm bar during the load. Overall good approach, gets to extension with some pull-side power. Registered an exit velo of 80 mph. Ran a 7.70 60.
Drew Mathies, 2B/MIF, Shelbyville HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 150 pound sophomore possesses good athleticism and speed. Ran a 7.01 60. Defensively, showcased soft hands with quick feet and a quick, clean exchange. Good body control and the ability to throw from multiple angles. At the plate starts wide with high hands, using a short stride. Drops hands during load. Long, level swing path and good rhythm. Line drive hitter.
Drew Stanton, 2B/MIF, Carmel HS, 2017: A 5-foot-10, 155 pound sophomore possesses average hands defensively. Needs to improve foot speed to stay up the middle. Across the diamond was 71 mph and ran a 7.89 60. At the plate starts balanced with a smooth load. Stride is short with average bat speed. Will get to extension, driving the ball to his pull-side. Good rhythm throughout.
Riley Tirotta, SS, Mishawaka Marian HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 170 pound sophomore possesses a projectable, athletic frame. Defensively, possesses above average hands with a strong arm at 81 mph. Plays through the baseball well. At the plate starts open with a smooth load. Stride is short with average use of the lower half. Bat speed is above average and gets to extension. Line drive hitter. Registered an exit velo of 80 mph. Ran a 7.11 60.
Austin Turner, SS, McCutcheon HS, 2017: An athetlic 5-foot-10, 160 pound sophomore with above average hands and fluid feet. Exchange is clean and plays through the baseball. 72 across the diamond. Switch hitter offensively. Naturally a better RHH, with quick hands and a smooth load. Stride is short. Gets the barrel through the zone consistently producing hard hit line drives. From the left side uses a small load with short stride. Lacks elite bat speed. More of a contact hitter’s approach. Ran a 7.31 60.
Brandon Vermillion, 2B/MIF, Daleville HS, 2016: 6-foot, 170 pound Junior ran a 7.10 60. Across the diamond is 72 mph from a long arm action. Hands are average. Showcased the ability to get rid of it and plays through the baseball. Offensively, the LHH stats open with a smooth load. Stride is short. Shows above average bat speed with a level path to the baseball. Ability to drive the gaps. Registered an exit velo of 82 mph.
