2016 Draft: Third Day Thoughts

By Nathan Rode

Done and done. In 40 rounds across three days, 1,216 amateurs were drafted. Nearly 48 hours after the Phillies started things with OF Mickey Moniak (La Costa Canyon HS, CA), the Cardinals capped it off with OF Jeremy Ydens (St. Francis HS, CA). Both are UCLA recruits. Only one will make it to the Bruins.

The third day of the draft always starts with interest, as we wait to see what prospects will get picked early with teams hoping they can sign them with leftover money. After that, it gets random as prospects are scattered among senior signs and roster fillers. I tweeted beforehand, it’s important to remember that 900 players get drafted on the third day. In 2015, 639 of those players signed. Only six got a bonus of $500,000 or more. The highest was $900,000. Three of those six bonuses went to high school prospects, including the top amount, and a total of 16 high school players got $250,000 or more.
