Mt. Vernon High School (Fortville) left-handed pitcher Zach Spears recently committed to Miami University (OH). The highly projectable 6-foot-6, 210 pound southpaw was a member of Team Indiana at the 2013 Future Games. He possesses good athleticism for his size with a fastball that was up to 87 this summer.
PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose Miami (OH)?
Spears: I chose Miami because it is a prestigious academic school and they have a very good coaching staff and a very good program that is on the rise. I also chose to go there because they have believed in me since day one, and it just feels right.
PBR: When did you take your first visit to Miami?
Spears: I took my first visit to Miami last fall.
PBR: Where did the coaches first see you compete?
Spears: I am not exactly sure where they saw me first compete but I would like to say it was the futures games.
PBR: What do the coaches expect from you when you first arrive on campus?
Spears: They expect me to be a guy that can come in and work hard and compete as a freshman, and help the team out!
PBR: Were there any other schools you were considering?
Spears: Yes, there was other schools I was considering, but Miami just fits the best.
PBR: You were a member of the 2013 Future Games Team Indiana, what was your experience like playing in that event?
Spears: The experience at the PBR future games was one to remember. Their are numerous college coaches there and you get to play with the best in the Midwest and meet new people. It was a great experience.
PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you've faced within the state of Indiana?
Spears: The toughest I have ever faced is probably Tj Collett! He is a stud and a great player!
PBR: Now that you've committed, what are your goals going forward as a HS player?
Spears: My goals as a HS player now are to do the best I can to help my team win. I want to be a role model for the younger guys and lead my team to championships.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Spears: All of my Pony Express coaches have helped me tremendously become who I am today. I greatly appreciate what they did for me as player. I also give credit to Jeff Montgomery who helped me a lot with pitching and believed in me since day one no matter what and was always there! Also Corey Wade, for the short time I worked with him, he taught me many things, even when it was over the phone! He's helped tremendously as well!
