As we prepare for our 2014 high school preseason coverage, we are going to take a quick glance at teams from across the state.

OUTLOOK:

The Madison Cubs and Head Coach Shannon Barger expect to be better than last year's 12-16 team, and with sectionals held at Madison this year, the Cubs would love nothing more than to celebrate a 2014 sectional title on their own field.  Returning for Barger's team is four year starter and senior RHP/1B Clark Vaughn.  The 6-foot-4 righty is the top returning arm for the Cubs after compiling three wins with a 2.78 ERA last spring.  Vaugn is also the team's top returning hitter with a .346 BA in 2013.  Senior catcher Tanner Sauley enters his third year as a starter, but this will be the first year he's behind the plate full time. Another Cub entering his third year as a starter is Junior OF/3B Derek Anderson.  Anderson was the Cubs best hitter down the stretch last spring and Barger is hoping for continued improvement in Anderson this season.   Expected to take a step forward on the mound and at the plate this year is Junior SS/RHP Ethan Leach.  The development of Leach will go a long way in determining Madison's success. Three year starter Xavier Barnes returns to lead the Cubs in the outfield.  Barger will look to Barnes to be the Cubs lead off hitter this spring.  Another Junior expected to contribute this spring is 2B Tucker Callis.
