Senior Future Games: Team Midwest Takeaways

By: Illinois Scouting Staff

From Wednesday, July 24, through Sunday, July 28, Prep Baseball hosted it's prestigious Future Games at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Ga., featuring the country's best uncommitted talent. For the first time ever, Team Midwest brought a Senior Future Games team down to compete against teams all across the country, finishing the week at a 0-3 clip.

Now, we would like to shine some light on the boys that came down to compete, and you can find scouting reports on each and every one of them, below.

TAKEAWAYS

+ INF Julian Ashley-Friedman (Barrington, 2025) is a physical 6-foot, 183-pound uncommitted middle infielder to know from Team Midwest. Currently ranked No. 61 in the state, Ashley-Friedman’s tools were on display all week down at LakePoint. Starting on the workout day, he ran a 6.95 60, reached a max vertical of 34”, and also tossed an 89 mph bullet across the infield. The right-handed hitter also had a loud showing during batting practice at the event - posting a 96.5 mph exit velocity (avg. 91.1), while also reaching a max distance of 333 feet. Ashley-Friedman also showed to have some of the quicker hands on average for the event at 24.1 mph. His power translated in-game as well, blasting a home run, among other extra-base hits during gameplay. Ashley-Friedman is certainly an uncommitted senior to monitor as we exit the summer circuit.

+ INF Dominic Holton (Notre Dame, 2025) had a strong showing during the workout, and he’s a dynamic prospect still on the market. The left-handed hitter has a clean swing with some obvious strength, boasting well above-average bat-speed (77.9 mph avg.) with the ability to cover the plate and take pitches where they are thrown. Throughout his round of BP, Holton worked his max EV up to 91.1 mph while averaging 88.2 mph. He’s a smooth, natural defender that should be able to stay on the left side of the infield at the next level, and his arm is plenty strong to back that up (T86 mph). He’s also an above-average athlete, having run a 6.84 60 in the past with a 36.4” vertical.

+ LHP Mason Orton (Mahomet-Seymour, 2025) recently made his commitment to Northern Illinois after his trip down to Georgia. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound southpaw has plenty of room for physical development down the road. He’s an athletic mover down the mound with a compact, quick arm, showing fastballs in the 84-87 mph range, but topping out at 88 mph with some arm-side run. He also mixed in a curveball at 74-78 mph, playing with tight horizontal action, as well as a low-80s change-up with slight fade to the arm-side.

+ OF Chase Petersen (Glenbrook North, 2025) continued his strong summer down at the Senior Future Games. During the workout day, the strong 5-foot-8, 183-pound outfielder ran a 6.91 60, put up a max vertical of 32”, and also reached 84 mph on a crow hop from the outfield. He showed well during batting practice as well - reaching a max exit velocity of 94.8 mph (avg. 90.8) paired with a max distance of 324 feet. Petersen’s Blast metrics also stood out, as he had a max bat speed of 86.4 mph (avg. 75.7), and a max hand speed of 24.4 mph (avg. 22.5). Petersen continued to show well during gameplay with the bat - finding barrels throughout the week.

+ RHP/C Calen Scheider (Hampshire, 2025) is an intriguing two-way still on the market in Illinois. The right-hander was down a couple ticks velocity wise in this look just with it being the end of the summer, but he’s an arm we are very fond of; having touched 90 mph in the past with a quick arm and above-average off-speed. At the plate, the right-handed hitter has a simple, compact operation with some looseness and quick hands. His aforementioned arm strength is one of his biggest weapons behind the plate, helping him limit the run game with a sub-2.00 pop-time and top velocity of 82 mph from the chute.

+ RHP Andrew Tay (Mt. Zion, 2025) is an intriguing arm that’s still uncommitted after this event. Standing in an athletic frame with upside at 6-foot-2, 185-pounds, Tay has simple and clean actions on the mound. His arm is compact in the backside and moves into a ¾ slot with acceleration out front. His fastball sat 83-86 mph with some ride through the zone, while also twirling a slider at 76-78 mph with short, horizontal break. He rounded out his arsenal with a 80 mph change-up with fade to the arm-side. An uncommitted name-to-know.
