On Wednesday, October 9th, the Prep Baseball Illinois/Wisconsin staff traveled down to Quincy, IL for the John Wood CC Scout Day. There were numerous players that showed well for themselves on the day, and you can find scouting reports plus videos on these standouts, below. 

Position Players 

So. C Jacob Lopez (Bartow, 2023)
6-foot, 205-pound frame, some present strength throughout, evenly distributed. The right-handed hitter took a strong round of BP, showing some feel to use the whole field with a compact and strong operation (T95.2 mph max EV). Steady hands behind the plate, works to present pitches around the zone. Short arm action into a high ¾ release, not afraid to use the turf (T75 mph; 2.11 pop-time). 

So. C Michael Stupavsky (Quincy Notre Dame, 2023) 
6-foot, 185-pound frame, lean and high-waisted. Stupavsky took one of the louder rounds of BP on the day with a max EV of 98.1 mph, averaging 92.4 mph. He gets his foot down early and stays balanced into a flat path that stays in the zone. Sure-handed receiver of the baseball, works under the ball to present pitches around the zone. Quick, whippy arm that plays from a higher release, ball plays with some life out of the hand (T81 mph; 2.07 pop-time). 

So. OF Jorey Anderson (Worland, 2022)
6-foot, 190-pounds. Anderson is a top returner for the Blazers with a .302 average in 162 at-bats last spring, also collecting nine doubles, 33 RBIs, 42 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. He’s an above-average athlete, recording a 6.87 in the 60. Athletic right-handed swing that works to stay on top of the baseball, reaching up to 93 mph for his max EV. Athletic defender with some bounce in the outfield and soft hands, moves well into a crow hop, clean arm that plays from a ¾ release with quickness out front, T85 mph. 

Fr. INF Gavin Duran (Harvest Christian, 2024) 
5-foot-7, 184-pounds, compact with some present strength. Duran looks to be a top newcomer for the Blazers, showing well in multiple aspects on the day. Strong left-handed swing with controlled intent, stays balanced through impact, plenty of power in his operation with a max EV of 96.3 mph (T372’). Athletic defender, quick hands and footwork, showed range up the middle. Quick release with a lower slot, can play from multiple angles, T80 mph. 6.70 runner in the 60. 

So. OF Haidyn McGill (O’Fallon, 2023) 
5-foot-10, 160-pounds, lean and wiry frame with room to add strength. McGill was a top performer for the Blazers last spring, hitting his way to a .311 average in 106 at-bats. Well above-average athlete, cruising to a 6.63 in the 60. A left-handed hitter, McGill has a shorter and direct swing, using mostly his pull-side throughout his round. Athletic defender that plays through the ball with steady hands, quick/fluid footwork, glides around easily, moves well into a crow hop, clean ¾ release (T82 mph). 

Fr. OF Evan Sohn (Quincy, 2024)
5-foot-5, 140-pound frame. Left-handed hitter that can run, recording a 6.75 in the 60-yard dash. At the plate, he has a flatter swing that worked on the barrel throughout his round, keeping the ball mostly on a line up the middle and to his pull-side gap, reaching up to 94 mph for his max EV with a max distance of 338’. Athletic defender with bounce and fluid footwork, quick arm from a ¾ slot, T84 mph. 

So. 1B Philip Matos (Santo Domingo, 2023) 
6-foot-3, 250-pounds, present strength. Matos took a clean round of BP while showing a strong, yet repeatable stroke, compact operation with a balanced finish, used the middle of the field and his pull-side with some backspin (T94.5 EV; 89 mph avg. EV). Soft hands at first with a fluid two-hand gather, moves well around the bag with feel for the position. 

Lucas Magruder (South Shelby, 2023) and Fr. Isaac Long (Franklin, 2024) are a couple first basemen that took loud rounds of BP, both reaching up to 98 mph for their max EV.

Two-Way

So. INF/RHP Kevin Martinez (Island Coast, 2023) 
5-foot-10, 195-pounds. Martinez, an All MWAC Honorable Mention as a two-way, returns a .306 average in 160 at-bats with 12 doubles, 37 RBIs, 33 runs scored and seven stolen bases. He also brings back 72.1 innings on the mound in which he struck out 76 against only 23 walks. The right-handed hitter has an intentful stroke that worked on the barrel with a max EV of 100 mph and a max distance of 377’, consistently using the big part of the field. Steady defender on the infield with some feel for the position, strong arm across with carry (T88 mph). On the mound, Martinez worked his fastball up to 89 mph, sitting mostly 87-88 mph with carry through the zone. To pair off the four-seam he also featured a hard running two-seam with late life, 83-85 mph. He showed a knack to spin the curveball, playing over 2,500 rpm at times with sharp 11/5 shape and depth, showing feel around and under the zone, 69-72 mph. Slider was firm in the 77-80 mph range with a short wrinkle. To finish off his arsenal he went to a changeup in the 78-80 mph range with big arm-side run (T16.8” HM), thrown with intent. 

Pitchers 

So. RHP Alex Logan (Quincy, 2023) 
6-foot-1, 170-pounds with room to add strength. Athletic and loose mover, whippy arm that plays from a ¾ window, more in the tank. His fastball played in the 90-92 mph range with finish through the zone (T2394 rpm). His slider looks to be his best off-speed offering with hard, slurvy action and depth, playing around 75-79 mph (T2525 rpm). Changeup flashed hard arm-side action at 83-85 mph, was able to land it consistently in the zone. 

Fr. RHP Kaden Meeker (Harvest Christian, 2024) 
6-foot-5, 195-pounds, athletic build with room to fill out in the coming years. Up-tempo delivery with a short leg-lift into balance point, works in-line, long and loose arm-swing that plays into a ¾ release, arm-speed out front. The fastball jumps out of the hand at 90-92 mph, playing with finish and nearly 2,400 rpm at its’ peak. Curveball and slider are both quality offerings; CB sat 73-75 mph with tight 11/5 shape and depth, while the SL showed more 10/4 shape at 79-81 mph (T2341 rpm). His changeup looks to be another effective way for him to change the pace, playing in the 81-82 mph range with hard dive at times to his arm-side. 

So. LHP Landon Gilliland (Atlanta, 2023) 
6-foot-3, 200-pounds, evenly distributed and proportionate frame. The southpaw gave an intriguing look with a fastball that played around 87-88 mph, reaching nearly 2,500 rpm with some carry and also setting up a two-seam in the 83-86 mph range with arm-side action. His slider has tight 1/7 shape and is thrown with intent, 70-73 mph (T2637 rpm). He rounded out his four-pitch mix with a changeup at 72-78 mph, playing mostly straight. 

So. RHP Ethan McMasters (Westville, 2023) 
5-foot-10, 180-pounds. His breaking balls stole the show in his ‘pen, with his curveball playing up to 3,180 rpm at 76-77 mph, and his slider reaching up to 3,092. His curveball has swing/miss action and depth from an 11/5 plane, while his slider showed more horizontal action with a shorter bend, still playing with sharp bite. His fastballs struggled to find the zone, but there is a clear difference between the two; with his four-seam showing more carry traits, and the two-seam showing more arm-side action, 86-88 mph. He also flashed a changeup that played mostly straight in the low-80s to finish off his arsenal. 

So. RHP Drew Hahs (Saxony Lutheran, 2023) 
6-foot-1, 205-pounds. Another right-hander that showed a knack to spin the breaking ball, Hahs routinely spun his curveball between 2,800-2,900 rpm and his slider between 2,300-2,700 rpm. He was around the zone with his fastball, showing some horizontal action at 85-86 mph. 

Fr. RHP Mitchell Meier (Central, 2024), So. RHP Jacob Millar (Welland Centennial Secondary, 2023), So. RHP Jackson Chu (St. Charles, 2022) and Fr. RHP Gabe Wagner (Inspiration Academy, 2024) are four arms that showed some impressive arm-strength on the day - with Meier topping out at 92 mph, Chu and Wagner both topping out at 88 mph, and Millar reaching 87 mph.
