Class of 2013 standouts from Top Prospect Showcase

In the final installment of player profiles from the Prep Baseball Report Top Prospect Showcase on June 16 at the Max, we bring the Class of 2013 standout performers. While the event was chiefly comprised of 2012 prospects, there were several high-level incoming juniors who performed well in front of more than 90 college coaches and pro scouts.
A look at the top Class of 2013 prospects at the event:
1. Bryce Only, 3B/SS, Huntley HS, Class of 2013
The 6-foot, 185-pound Only is one of the premier prospects in the Class of 2013. Offensively, Only has an advanced approach. He?s loose, quiet, balanced and is explosive through the ball, as he generates excellent backspin loft. He has quick hands and has impressive barrel whip through the zone. Defensively, he demonstrated plus hands and actions at third base, while showcasing a solid arm across the diamond (80 mph). Only plays through the ball well and his throws have good life.
2. Anthony Ray, OF, St. Rita HS, Class of 2013
Ray is an athletically gifted 6-foot, 157-pound left-handed hitting outfielder who possesses all the tools to be a high-level prospect. Ray, who ran a 6.9 60, was particularly impressive in the outfield. He moves extremely well, taking confident routes to the baseball, and demonstrated plus arm strength (87 mph). He stays on top of the baseball well, working downhill, which gives his throws excellent carry. Offensively, Ray continued to impress. The left-handed hitter showcased top-level bat speed and barrel whip through the zone. He has an aggressive approach and gets through the ball well. Ray has extremely long arms and legs, and when he physically develops, he has the potential to mature into a premier national prospect.
3. Anthony Drago, C/1B, Lake Zurich HS, Class of 2013
Drago is an athletically built 6-foot, 170-pound athlete who looks to be one of the premier left-handed hitters in the Class of 2013. Drago hits with an open stance, and remains balanced and explosive throughout. He has tremendous looseness in his swing, and creates impressive barrel whip through the zone. The ball jumps off his bat with excellent backspin carry. Drago?s power projects at a high level. Defensively, Drago?s top pop time was a 2.07.
4. Jake McCabe, SS/RHP, Marian Catholic HS, Class of 2013
The 6-foot-2, 160-pound McCabe is a projectable two-way talent who impressed with his athleticism and upside. McCabe ran a 6.9 60 and showed athletic feet and actions at shortstop, in addition to a solid arm across the infield (78 mph). He also demonstrated soft hands and played through the ball well. Offensively, McCabe demonstrated good rhythm and overall hitting mechanics with his line-drive swing. On the mound, the right-hander continued to impress with a quick, whippy arm action from a ¾ arm slot. His fastball topped at 81 mph with some sink and run action. His 66 mph curveball had slurve action. As McCabe fills out physically, look for him to continue to add velocity.
5. Ryan Sample, C, Manteno HS, Class of 2013
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Sample looks to be one of the premier defensive catchers in the Class of 2013. He demonstrated quick, precise footwork, and a fast exchange. All of Sample?s throws were on the bag, glove side, with pop times of 1.95, 2.05, 2.06. Sample stays low, and did an exemplary job catching velocity during bullpens. Offensively, he has an aggressive approach and demonstrated some bat speed and barrel whip through the zone. Sample also ran a 7.2 60.
6. Troy VandenBroek, OF/INF, Belvidere HS, Class of 2013
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound strong-bodied athlete showcased a strong and accurate arm (86 mph) from the outfield. VandenBroek took an aggressive approach as he played through the ball and moved well in the outfield. His foot speed and athleticism were also on display when he ran a 7.08 60. At the plate, Vandenbroek exhibited some power potential and bat speed. He showcased an explosive lower half while his barrel whipped through the zone.
7. Grant Amick, RHP/3B, New Trier HS, Class of 2013
Amick is a physically advanced 6-foot-1, 195-pound athlete who showed well in all aspects of the game. On the mound, the right-hander showed some arm strength with a lively fastball that topped at 84 mph. Coming from a high-3/4 arm slot, Amick also flashed a developing 67-72 mph breaking ball. Offensively, Amick showcased power potential, as he used his strong lower half to drive the ball with good loft. Amick, who ran a 7.27 60, also showed a solid arm across the infield.
8. Paul Boidonis, RHP/INF, Glenbrook North HS, Class of 2013
The physical 6-foot-4, 225-pound right-hander operated from a high ¾ arm slot with a fastball that sat at 81-83 mph and topped at 84 mph. He displayed a quick arm action and showcased some rhythm throughout his mechanics. Boidonis flashed a tight 11/5 curveball with late movement. At the plate, Boidonis showed some power potential and bat speed while squaring up balls.
9. Ryan Kahne, RHP/3B, Lincoln-Way Central HS, Class of 2013
Kahne is a long and rangy 6-foot-2, 155-pound projectable athlete who showed well on the mound and at as a position player. At third base, Kahne showed athletic feet and smooth defensive actions while delivering firm, accurate throws across the infield. Offensively, Kahne showed clean swing mechanics with good rhythm and balance throughout. When he fills out physically, Kahne should acquire more power. On the mound, the right-hander has an easy arm action with a fastball that topped at 82 mph with some late life. Kahne also ran a 7.27 60.
10. Brad Margolin, C/RHP, Glenbrook North HS, Class of 2013
Margolin is an extremely athletic 5-foot-8, 175-pound two-way player who demonstrated impressive raw tools. Margolin ran one of the top 60s at the event, 6.75, which was the best 60 time of the 2013 prospects. Aside from his speed, Margolin showed arm strength on the mound, topping out at 84 mph, sitting at 83. Defensively, Margolin registered a pop time of 2.13, while demonstrating solid footwork behind the plate. Offensively, Margolin is physically strong and showed some pop.
11. Bill Hayes, C, Lemont HS, Class of 2013
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Hayes showed extremely well behind the plate. Hayes stays in a low, athletic position, and fired strikes to second base with consistent pop times of 2.08, 2.09 and 2.10. His velocity from the crouch was 77 mph. During bullpen sessions, Hayes received with a firm wrist and soft hands. Offensively, Hayes ran a 7.35 60 and has a balanced, athletic setup in the box. He showed a quick, line drive swing as he barreled shots to all fields.
12. Daniel Vilardo, OF/LHP, Cary Grove, Class of 2013
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound athlete showed impressive foot speed, running a 6.89 60. In the outfield, Vilardo moved well and displayed an accurate arm. At the plate, the left-handed hitting Vilardo started from an open stance and showcased some bat speed. With his athletic body type and speed, Vilardo looks to be a projectable player to watch.

Dylan Balogh, RHP, Barrington HS, Class of 2013
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander operated from a high ¾ arm slot with good rhythm throughout. Balogh displayed a clean arm action and showcased a fastball that sat at 75-77 mph. He additionally displayed some feel for his change which exhibited some fade down in the zone.
Dan Bedore, LHP, Lake Forest HS, Class of 2013
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound left-hander operated from a high ¾ arm slot with a fastball that sat at 76-77 mph. Bedore flashed a tight 11/5 shape on his curveball and displayed some feel for his change. Bedore?s size and clean arm action can be projected into increased velocity in the future.
Anthony Bozin, OF, Stevenson HS, Class of 2013
The 5-foot-8, 160-pound athlete showed foot speed, running a 6.87 60. In the outfield, Bozin moved well as he took good routes and playing through the ball. At the plate, Bozin exhibited an open setup and a well-balanced swing. Bozin sprayed line drives to all fields and showed a level swing.
Ben Browdy, INF, Deerfield HS, Class of 2013
The 5-foot-11, 160-pounder displayed soft hands and an accurate arm in the infield. Ben fielded the ball out front and in an athletic position. At the plate, Browdy exhibited a quiet swing and balance throughout. His path to the ball was short, and he consistently found the barrel.
Tyler Feece, LHP, Vernon Hills HS, Class of 2013
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound lefty exhibited a feel for all three pitches. Feece topped at 82 mph coming from a ¾ arm slot and displayed a clean arm action. Feece showed good rhythm and tempo throughout his mechanics. The left-hander?s curveball displayed 11/5 shape and depth. His changeup also looked to be a solid pitch, as it had fade down in the zone.
Dane Hutcheon, SS, Pine Grove HS (CO), Class of 2013
Hutcheon in the field displayed impressive actions and fielded the ball out front in an athletic position. Hutcheon?s hands worked well in the field while playing through the baseball. His backhand was smooth and he showcased an accurate arm with a quick release across the infield. At the plate, the 5-foot-9, 160-pound left-handed hitter sprayed line drives and displayed a well-balanced and smooth swing.
Matthew Lawrence, SS/3B, UIC Lab HS, Class of 2013
The 5-foot-10, 150-pound infielder showed solid hands and feet in the field. At the plate, the switch hitter showcased a level line drive-conducive swing. Lawrence consistently found the barrel while demonstrating good balance.
Samuel Lawrence, 3B/SS, UIC Lab HS, Class of 2013
The 5-foot-11, 160-pound player showcased a level, smooth swing with solid hitting mechanics. Lawrence exhibited a balanced setup and some rhythm in his swing. In the field, Lawrence displayed an accurate arm and moved well laterally.
Tyler Parquette, LHP, Crystal Lake South HS, Class of 2013
The left-hander threw from a ¾ arm slot with a fastball that came in at 77-78 mph. Parquette displayed a clean arm action and his fastball exhibited run. The 5-foot-10, 155-pounder displayed good balance throughout his mechanics and threw all pitches for strikes. Parquette?s curveball displayed some bite and changeup exhibited fade.
Seth Rosenberg, C/1B, New Trier HS, Class of 2013
Rosenberg is a 6-foot, 195-pound left-handed hitting catcher who displayed a solid arm behind the plate, registering a top pop time of 2.12. Seth showcased some arm-strength as well, throwing 76 mph from the crouch. At the plate, the left-hand hitting catcher displayed a balanced setup and a level swing. Rosenberg consistently squared up the ball, hitting line drives with some backspin carry.
Jesus Saavedra, RHP/INF, Maine South HS, Class of 2013
The 6-foot, 165-pound right-hander threw from a ¾ arm slot with a fastball that sat at 80 mph and topped at 81 mph. The lean righty exhibited run on his fastball which was located down in the zone. His slider came in at 70 mph and flashed late movement. At the plate, Jesus showcased solid hands and a level line-drive-conducive swing. In the field, Jesus displayed solid hands and an accurate arm.
Alec Semersky, OF/1B/RHP, Libertyville HS, Class of 2013
At 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, Semersky has an athletic, projectable body type. He showed his athleticism in the 60, as he ran a 7.1. In the outfield, he moves fluidly with throws that registered at 75 mph. At the plate, Semersky has short, compact right-handed swing. On the mound, he is a side-armer who has some deception in his delivery.
Brett Shimanovsky, LHP, Highland Park HS, Class of 2013
The lean 6-foot, 170-pound left-hander operated from a high ¾ arm slot with a fastball that sat at 80-81 mph and topped at 82 mph. Shimanovsky displayed good rhythm and a long clean arm action. His curveball flashed tight spin and break, and showed a feel for his changeup. With continued development Shimanovsky should see a spike in velocity.
Zack Wade, C, Deerfield HS, Class of 2013
Wade is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound catcher who displayed solid fundamentals. At the plate, Wade displayed a balanced swing and aggressive lower half. Wade consistently found the barrel, hitting line drives to all fields. Behind the plate, Wade exhibited a clean release while throwing a 2.17 pop time that was consistently on the bag.
Reed Watson, C, Rochester HS, Class of 2013
Watson is a physically advanced 6-foot-1, 200-pound catcher who has a strong lower half. Offensively, Watson demonstrated power potential at the plate. When he stays balanced, the ball jumps off his bat with some backspin carry. Defensively, Watson registered a top pop time of a 2.27.
