DePaul College Prep vs St. Laurence - 3/30/23
By: Peter Hamot
Area Scout, Staff Writer
Joe Olson, LHP, St. Laurence, 2025
Louisville commit. Currently ranked No. 3 in the state. Olson looks to have added some strength to his 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame while also appearing to be larger than listed. Started on the mound for the Vikings and tossed four innings with one earned run, two hits, nine strikeouts and one walk. The southpaw worked his fastball up to 87 mph early on but settled in around 83-85 mph in the cold Chicago weather. He often went to a sharp breaking ball at 77-79 mph, thrown with intent and depth off a 1/7 plane. He also flashed a changeup at 80 mph, dropping his slot slightly but maintaining arm-speed and playing with fade. He has a hard-nosed attitude on the mound with a “try and hit it mentality” and the stuff to match. High-level 2025 arm.
Luke Stulga, OF, St. Laurence, 2023
Illinois-State commit. Currently ranked No. 28 in the state. Physical, 6-foot-3, 190-pound build, round shoulders with evenly distributed weight. Hit out of the three-hole for the Vikings and finished the day 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. The right-handed hitter remains somewhat quiet and simple with his operation, before exploding through the zone with quick hands and a direct path, turning on an 88 mph fastball for a double in his first at-bat. Confident defender in the outfield, athletic actions with fluid footwork, also covers ground easily (6.54 60-runner).
