Today’s unsigned senior spotlight is Neuqua Valley shortstop Matt Wollnik. Wollnik is a 5-foot-11 shortstop who has demonstrated a defensive prowess which is advanced from his peers. He recently showcased himself at our Unsigned Senior Showcase on January 13th and was rated as our top position player prospect at the event.
Wollnik is an athletic middle infielder who showed excellent athleticism and hands at the shortstop position. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Wollnik made the position look easy as he demonstrated soft hands and a quick clean release. He showed accuracy across the diamond at 80 mph operating from an over the top slot that created carry through his target, he also showed the ability to release the baseball athletically while on the move.
Offensively, Wollnik hit from an open stance and used a short stride with a slight leg lift to get into his hitting position. His quick hands in the field translated to the plate as well where he exhibited bat control and exit velocities of 82 mph from the tee.
Overall, Wollnik shows advanced defensive skills and should be a highly sought after senior this spring.
