On Oct. 11, the PBR Illinois staff hosted the fall Unsigned Senior Showcase at The MAX in McCook, Ill. The event featured nearly 100 prospects with a plethora of them having committed to college already. Shortly after the event’s conclusion, we provided some instant analysis from the day's top performers in our Quick Hits and Statistical Analysis posts. We continue our post-event analysis this week with position-by-position analysis, after publishing scouting reports on the day’s catchers, outfielders, and infielders last week. We’re onto the pitchers today.

We broke our rankings down into right- and left-handed pitching groups. At the top of the righty list is the thin 6-foot-8 prospect, Peyton Olejnik (Hanover Central, IN, 2021). Olejnik has some obvious upside in a build like that, with some room to add strength to enhance his loose, quick arm that reached an 86 mph high at this event. He’s able to generate some extension and carry through the zone, and he’s shown signs of reining in his long levers to throw strikes often enough. He’s a highly interesting, still uncommitted arm in Indiana’s senior class.

Sturdy/strong RHP Connor Lutes (Libertyville, 2021) reached the top max fastball high at this event, and he’s also able to produce interesting peripheral traits within his arsenal. Lutes averaged the largest extension to home at this event, aiding his heavy mid-80s velocity.

Southpaw Lane Funneman (Pana, 2021; Southwestern Illinois JC commit) was one of this event’s biggest winners. An athletic 6-foot-2 who reached an 85 mph high with a low-spin, heavy fastball produced from a clean and easy arm action. And Funneman has an evident feel to mix in a tight breaking ball, too.

TOP RHP PROSPECTS

1. Peyton Olejnik, Hanover Central (IN), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-8, 170-pounds. Highly-projectable frame. Long, loose levers, high-waisted with plenty of room for continued physical development.
Delivery: Fluid, athletic, tall and fall delivery. Repeats well given his extra-long levers.
Arm Action: RH. Loose, quick arm action, plays from a high 3/4 slot. Average extension of 6.54 feet on his fastball, according to TrackMan.
FB: T86, 84-85 mph. Comes out of the hand clean, late finish through the zone. Creates advanced tilt at times. Max spin rate of 2360 rpm. Max induced vertical break of 20.6 inches.
CB: 63-64 mph. Advanced spin metrics; 2531 max rpm with an average of 2423. 12/6 shape, above-average depth.
SPLT: 74-75 mph. Thrown with confidence. Feel for the bottom of the zone, late fade.

2. Conner Lutes, Libertyville  (IL), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP/1B
Body: 6-4, 223-pounds. Strong, athletic build.
Delivery: Starts with slight knee-bend, quick tempo with some rhythm, lands square, in line with plate, shoulders work slightly uphill. Huge extension to home (7.08 feet on average, the event-high) helps increase perceived velocity.
Arm Action: RH. High 3/4 arm slot, short action, some extension.
FB: T87, 85-86 mph. Mostly straight, showed intent to use top of the zone, average spin at 1,973 rpm and 14.1 inches of induced vertical break.
CB: 67-68 mph. 11/5 action with depth, feel, landed at the bottom of the zone, average spin rate of 2,050 RPM.
SL: 73-74 mph. 10/4 action, short, tight, average spin rate of 2,110 RPM.
CH: 74-75 mph. Slight arm side fade, thrown for strikes.

3. Matthew Rosenberger, Glenbrook South (IL), 2021

5. Cade Landrus, Charleston (IL), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP/SS
Body: 5-10, 160-pounds. Athletic, well-proportioned build.
Delivery: Smooth tall and fall delivery, works on-line and lands front-toe closed.
Arm Action: RH. Clean, uninterrupted arm action, plays loose and out of a natural high 3/4 slot. Ability to drop down and throw from multiple angles including side-arm to submarine.
FB: T85, 82-84 mph. Controls the zone, late arm-side-run, finish through the zone.
CB: 72-73 mph. Thrown with aggression and confidence, 11/5 shape, feel for the zone. 2387 max rpm.
SL: 70-71 mph. Dropped down from submarine to throw the slider. Sweeping action with a max spin rate of 2388 rpm.
CUT: 78-79 mph. Thrown with intent, late horizontal 10/4 action.

6. Austin Bean, Grayslake Central (IL), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP/C
Body: 6-4, 185-pounds. Lean lanky frame.
Delivery: Starts off right side of rubber, large side step rock with big leg swing to coiled balance point, hip turn. Drops and drives in a high front side, fluid momentum down the mound to a square, toe-closed landing.
Arm Action: RH. Short draw, compact circle from an over-the-top slot. Loose, quick arm speed.
FB: T84, 83-84 mph. Natural tail with substantial carry; averaged an induced vertical break of 19.7 inches at an average spin rate of 2,216 rpm. Feel for strikes.
CB: 64-65 mph. Depth and feel to spin off a 10/4 plane. Averaged -13.6 and -11.4 inches of vertical and horizontal break, at 2,202 rpm.
CH: 72-73 mph. Similar slot and arm speed; slight deceleration at times. Generates arm-side run and fade effectively from circle grip.

7. Marc Black, Springfield (IL), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP/OF
Body: 6-0, 155-pounds. Athletic frame.
Delivery: Tall, staggered start from the right of the rubber; smooth, low tempo side step to tall balance point, low knee lift, quick pace to home, level shoulders, works on line. Square landing, low-effort finish with some athleticism; maintains balance well throughout.
Arm Action: RH. Long draw and circle to high 3/4 slot; easy, loose, quick arm.
FB: T85, 83-85 mph. Some natural tail but mostly a straight four-seam type with substantial carry; averaged an induced vertical break of 19.8 inches, among the event's highest.
CH: 73-74 mph. Slightly lowers release height but maintains similar arm speed; generates arm-side run/fade well.
SPLT: 70-71 mph. Does feature some late tumble that differs from the changeup grip and movement profile; some feel for it.

Delivery: Tall and fall delivery, creates some deception working slightly across his body and staying closed down the mound.
Arm Action: RH. Short, quick arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T84, 83-84 mph. Plays lively out of the hand, max spin rate of 2256 rpm with a max induced vertical break of 20.9 inches, via TrackMan.
CB: 70-72 mph. Thrown with aggression at times, 11/5 shape and a max spin rate of 2113 rpm.
CH: 67-68 mph. Slight fade action.

9. Brian Wrenn, Geneva Community (IL), 2021; Waubonsee CC commit
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6-1, 170-pounds. Athletic build.
Delivery: Tall, staggered from the left edge of the rubber; small side step to tall balance point, high knee lift, leg drops and strides to square, toe-closed landing. Balanced, athletic finish.
Arm Action: RH. Short draw, swings to high slot, opens shoulder early, stable at plant; over-the-top slot, high average release height (6.19 feet).
FB: T83, 81-82 mph. Steep angle to home creates some downhill tilt, heavy feel; substantial carry at an average induced vertical break of 20.4 inches.
CB: 68-69 mph. Aggressive 11/5 shape at arm speed; flashed sharp, downer action.

T-10. Zachary Porter, Lake Forest (IL), 2021
Positional Profile: RHP/SS
Body: 6-0, 170-pounds. Athletic build with well-proportioned strength throughout.
Delivery: Wide, squared start; side step rock to coiled balance point, level knee lift. Fluid stride to square landing, toe closed; works on target, brief high front side, athletic finish square to home.
Arm Action: RH. Simple, compact arm action; loose from a high 3/4 slot.
FB: T84, 83-84 mph. Flashes carry with consistent arm-side action; averaged 13.9 inches of horizontal break at an average spin rate of 2,093 rpm.
CB: 67-68 mph. Slight arm deceleration but demonstrates a feel to spin it, averaged 2,466 rpm; generates large horizontal action (-16.2 inches on average). Slurve-type that flashed sharp action.
SL: 71-73 mph. Throws it more firmly; shorter horizontal action. Showed a greater feel to locate and spin the curveball in a similar movement profile.

Arm Action: RH. Long, quick arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T85, 83-84 mph. Low-spin fastball with an average rpm of 1685. Average extension of 6.59 feet and max induced vertical break of 17.2 inches.

Delivery: Smooth, slight drop and drive delivery, works with rhythm, easy effort and highly-repeatable. Showed feel for a four-pitch repertoire and above-average spin on two different breaking balls.
