Unsigned Senior Showcase - Chicago: LHP Analysis

This week we began our rollout of the positional analysis from the Unsigned Senior Showcase at The MAX on October 8th. Following the event we rolled out the full Statistical Analysis and Quick Hitsfrom the event.
Earlier today we took a look at the top RHP prospects at the event. Below we breakdown the top left-handed arms in attendance, which is led by Ryan Surin (Joliet Catholic). Surin, one of the top available left-handers in the 2018 class, has a loose clean arm, feel for three pitches and ran his fastball up to 84 mph at the event.
Top LHP Prospects
1. Ryan Surin, LHP, Joliet Catholic, 2018
6-foot-2, 205-pound left-handed pitcher, athletic shape. Delivery repeats, smooth actions down the hill and on line, lands square, little effort. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball has arm side run, worked mostly 83-84 mph. Curveball flashed sharp hard action out of the windup, 73-75 mph, 1/7 shape, late break. Changeup sinks, 77-79 mph, loose fastball similar arm action.

2. Simon Herold, LHP, Minooka, 2018
6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed pitcher. Smooth delivery, repeats and on line, lands square. Arm action is clean, over the top slot. Fastball is straight, 79-82 mph. Curveball plays 1/7, 69-71 mph. Changeup runs to arm side, deceptive arm action, 74-76 mph.
3. Brock Seymour, LHP, Southwestern, 2018
Wiry frame, thin build, 6-foot-2, 160-pound left-handed pitcher, projectable frame. Smooth delivery, some effort. Loose quick arm action, over the top slot. Fastball has sinking action, 77-80 mph, touched 82 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 64-66 mph. Slider backed up, downer action, occasionally 1/7 plane, 66-69 mph.
4. Dan Balzhiser, LHP, Plainfield East, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed pitcher, average build. Tall and fall delivery, upright finish, max effort, showed ability to fill up the zone. Arm plays from a low ¾ slot. Fastball topped at 84 mph, sat 81-83 mph. Slider has sweeping action on 2/8 plane, 66-68 mph, showed feel for strikes. Changeup sat 72-74 mph, flashed fading action.
5. Matthew Schwenkel, LHP, Oak Forest, 2018
6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed pitcher, lean lanky frame. Tall and fall type delivery, stays on line, showed three pitches for strikes. Long ¾ arm action. Fastball sat 79-82 mph, feel for the strikezone, arm side action. Curveball has 1/7 shape, 68-70 mph, ability to drop for strikes with depth. Changeup has feel, 70-74 mph.
6. Nick Skurka, LHP, St. Charles North, 2018
6-foot-2, 200-pound athletic build, wide shoulders. Tall and fall delivery, works in rhythm, uphill plane at times. Little effort, arm action is short, high ¾ slot. Fastball flashed running action, 81-82 mph. Curveball showed 1/7 shape, ranged 64-71 mph. Changeup sinks, 68-74 mph.
7. Joe Gabel, LHP/1B, Maine South, 2018
Lanky, 6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed hitting LHP/1B. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Tall and Fall delivery with easy effort. Fastball worked 80-81 topping out at 82 mph for strikes. Curveball has 1-7 shape, flashes sharp breaking action at 67-69 mph for strikes. Changeup has sinking action at 72-75 mph. Frame and stuff project well on the mound. Balanced setup at the plate, drop load with average balance. Short, uphill swing path. 72 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.29. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 80 mph across the infield.
8. Justin Rios, OF/LHP, St. Laurence, 2018
5-foot-7, 160-pound, left/left, two-way prospect. At the plate, left-handed hitter, balanced setup, smooth load, short stride and good balance through contact. Loose hands, creates bat speed, stays short to the ball, gap-to-gap approach and makes consistent hard contact; 88 mph exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, athletic outfield actions, quick active feet, attacks the baseball, plays through, soft hands and quick, clean exchange. Throws from a high ¾ slot, clocked at 81 mph from the outfield. 7.38 runner in the 60, laser-timed. Left-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, regular effort throughout. Long arm action, out of a ¾ window. Fastball, arm-side-run, thrown for strikes, 78-81 mph, topped at 82. Feel for a changeup, late arm-side-run and sink, 73-74 mph. Curveball, 1/7 shape, sat 69-71 mph.
9. Charlie Anderson, LHP, Notre Dame, 2018
5-foot-11, 185-pound left-handed pitcher, solid build. Drop and drive type delivery with quick arm action from high ¾ slot. Fastball flashed heavy cut action, topped at 79 mph, sat 75-78 mph. Showed feel for curveball, 66-67 mph, 2/8 action. Slider played 65-69 mph, similar action to curveball.
10. Nick Malmberg, LHP, Grant, 2018
6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed pitcher. Slight drop and drive style delivery, arm action works with length out of a high ¾ slot, slightly across body. Controlled the zone with his fastball, 77-79 mph, arm side run. Curveball plays on 1/7 plane, also showed feel for the zone, 62-66 mph. Changeup sinks, kept down, 74-75 mph.

Kyle Crosby, LHP, South Elgin, 2018
5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. Rotational type delivery, regular effort, finishes to third base side. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot. Fastball flashed arm side run, 78-79 mph. Changeup has fading action, 72-74 mph.
Alexander Fierro, OF/LHP, St. Patrick, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound, two-way player with lean strength. 7.15 runner in the 60, laser-timed. At the plate, left-handed hitter, balanced open setup, short stride, slight load action and collapses backside. Uphill bat path, looks to lift the ball, aggressive swing and pull approach at times. 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, quick feet, plays through the baseball and quick release. Long arm action and throws clocked at 77 mph. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, strides open and long arm action. Fastball works out of high ¾ slot, arm-side-run, 78-80 mph. Curveball works from a ¾ slot, 2/8 sweeping action, ranged between 66-69 mph. Changeup, comes out of a low 3/4 , side-arm slot, fade action, 69-71 mph.
Jarod Galanos, LHP, Morton West, 2018
6-foot, 160-pound left-handed pitcher, wiry frame. Drop and drive delivery, works up and over a firm front leg. Short arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball showed sinking action to his arm side, 72-74 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape, 67-70 mph. Changeup sinks, 68-69 mph.
Ben Mazulla, LHP, St. Joseph, 2018
5-foot-9, 140-pound left-handed pitcher. Tall and fall delivery, uses high leg kick, with rhythm. Arm action is long and loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 75-77 mph. Curveball played on 2/8 plane, 63-64 mph. Slider worked slightly harder at 67-69 mph, similar action. Changeup plays at 65-69 mph.
Jack Van Vooren, LHP/OF, Homestead (WI), 2018
6-foot-3, 190-pound, strong build, left/left, two-way prospect. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm and easy effort throughout. Long arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball sinking action down in the zone, 73-76 mph. Curveball, thrown for strikes, 1/7 shape, 61-64 mph. Changeup worked straight, ranged between 61-64 mph. At the plate, left-handed hitter, closed, taller setup and short stride. Pull approach at the plate, 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively, works through the baseball, reliable hands, long arm action from a ¾ slot, clocked at 76 mph. 8.00 runner in the 60.
Logan Walder, OF/LHP, Hoopeston, 2018
5-foot-10, 175-pound, two-way prospect with a strong frame. 7.38 runner in the 60. At the plate, left-handed hitter, balanced setup, low hands, leg-kick trigger, uphill bat path and works from gap-to-gap; 72 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, plays through the baseball at times, clean transfer, crow hop stays on-line. Over-the-top arm action, accurate throws clocked at 79 mph. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, drop and drive delivery, open toe landing. Arm works long and out of high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 65-70 mph. Curveball ranged between 57-61 mph. Changeup sat 60-64 mph.
