Underclassmen Spotlight: Evan Sandman, SS/RHP, Class of 2014

Today we catch up with Evan Sandmann, a multi-positional talent who attended the Underclassmen Invitational in January.

Evan Sandmann"Pick a position, any position, and Sandmann plays it – and plays it remarkably well. The 6-foot, 160-pound athlete proved he can play anywhere on the field with skill.  Behind the plate, Sandmann had pop time range of 2.03-2.08 and was clocked at 78 mph from the crouch with accurate throws.  In the field, Sandmann played well with athletic footwork and natural instincts from both the outfield and middle infield positions  He was clocked at 80 mph from the outfield and 73 mph from the infield.  Offensively, Sandmann is a left-handed hitter with an open setup and a smooth load.  He has an easy, loose swing with an athletic lower half and showed the ability to stay behind the ball.  He also ran a 7.39 60. On the mound, Sandmann continued to impress with his feel for three pitches and his quick arm.  He throws an 81-83 mph fastball with some run, a 67-69 mph slurve, and a 70-71 mph changeup, all of which he threw for strikes."

PBR: Have you ever attended a Prep Baseball Report event?  If so what were your impressions of the event?

Yes, I attended the underclass invitational and I was impressed with the level of talent and the organization of the showcase.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player?
I would say either my versatility or my awareness and knowledge of the game.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what are you most excited about this summer?
I play for the Chicago Elite and I'm most excited to be out on the field and play baseball. It was best said in the movie The Rookie "You know what we get to do today Brooks? We get to play baseball".

PBR: What are your goals both individually and for your summer team for the rest of spring and summer?
My goals are to get stronger and to exceed everyone's expectations for me. I would agree that my team and I have the ultimate goal of winning conference and state.

PBR: What is your most memorable moment in baseball so far in your life?
There are so many to choose from, but I would have to choose a memory from freshman year when I was brought in relief with the bases loaded in the top of the 9th inning with 1 out and a tie ballgame. The other team's dugout was getting really chippy and yelling "HE'S SCARED".  So I just turned and smiled at them and then got a strikeout and a groundball to get out of it.  I led off the next half inning with a lead-off double and two batters later my teammate followed it up with a walk off double down the line and I scored the winning run.

PBR: What are your stats so far in the High School season?
8.0 IP, 2 ER, 13 K's, .429 BA (6-14), 3 walks, .529 OBP, 11 SB's, .846 SB% (11-13), 7 RBI's. I've only played a few games because i just got cleared to play last week from a broken hand.
