On Oct. 20, the PBR Illinois hosted its final event of 2019, the Underclass Showcase, featuring over 110 of the state’s 2022 and 2023 prospects, as well as a handful of seventh- and eighth-grade players, at The MAX in McCook.

Last month, we shared our rapid analysis for this event inside our Quick Hits post, and took a statistical look at the day’s top performers inside our Stats Story. Monday marked the start of our position-by-position analysis, beginning with the day’s catchers. Today we breakdown the close to 60 infield prospects that attended the event.

The top 2022 infield prospect was 1B Ysen Useni (Crystal Lake South). Useni moves extremely well given his extra-large, physically-imposing frame and has big power potential in his right-handed bat. Useni will also play a role in the pitching analysis which is due to roll out tomorrow. 

Another physical right-handed hitting first baseman who impressed at the event was recent Illinois State commit Horacio Cabrales Jr. (Thornwood). Cabrales is confident in the box, has loose, strong hands and made a lot of loud contact in his round of BP. 

When it comes to 2023s, MIF’s Ben Oosterbaan (Hinsdale Central) and J.R. Nelson (Stevenson) led the list. Both show the ability to stay up the middle of the infield moving forward and can handle the bat from the right side of the plate. 

Out of the handful of 2024s and 2025s in attendance, MIF James Novakovic (New Trier, 2024) stood out as a left-handed hitter to keep an eye on. 2025 MIF DaMaurion Butler showed advanced defensive actions and feel for the barrel at the plate.

TOP 2022 INFIELD PROSPECTS

1. Ysen Useni, Crystal Lake South (IL), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP/1B High-follow 2022.
Body: 6-foot-2, 205-pounds. Strong projectable frame.
Hit: RHH. Athletic set-up, smooth leg lift, quiet hand load. Short bat path, extension through swing, quick bat speed, strong lower half. Ball jumps off the barrel.

2. Horacio Cabrales Jr, Thornwood (IL), 2022 (Illinois State commit)
Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 6-foot-2, 230-pounds. Wide frame, strong lower half.
Hit: RHH. Tall set-up, smooth hand load, Slow and fluid leg kick (showed a toe-tap stride at times). Loose hands, slight uphill bat path, fluid rhythm, confident at the plate.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 73 mph. Long arm action, over the top slot, accurate.
Defense: Presents glove early, two hand gather, clean exchange.
Run: 8.54 runner in the 60. 

3. Daniel Pacella, Mundelein (IL), 2022
Positional Profile: 1B/LHP
Body: 6-foot-3, 200-pounds. Tall, strong frame with room for continued physical development.
Hit: LHH. Tall balanced set-up, toe tap stride with rhythm. Short bat path, slightly uphill, extension through the baseball, lower half works well, plus pop.
Power: 91 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: LH. INF - 82 mph. Long and loose arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Defense: Active footwork, soft hands, quick exchange, advanced feel around the bag.

4. Sebastian Gutierrez, Nazareth Academy (IL), 2022
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP
Body: 6-foot, 155-pounds. Athletic build.
Hit: RHH. Open set-up, slight knee bend, quick leg lift, long stride. Short, uphill pat bath, gap to gap approach, swings with intent.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.

5. Brandon Pritchard, Lincoln-Way West (IL), 2022
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 5-foot-10, 145-pounds. Athletic build.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, athletic set-up with slight knee bend, hands load back and up, short stride.  Simple line drive approach with fast bat speed. Bat path stays level through the zone with extension, good separation, ball jumps off the barrel.
Power: 84 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 80 mph. Quick, high 3/4 release with some carry.
Defense: Soft hands, plays through the baseball out front, fluid footwork, above average actions.

6. Giovanni Pamias, Oak Park-River Forest (IL), 2022
Positional Profile: SS/2B Emerged as a 2022 infielder to follow.
Body: 5-foot-6, 140-pounds. Athletic build.
Hit: RHH. Balanced set-up, quiet smooth load with short stride.  Repeatable swing, quick hands and fluid rhythm. Worked gap to gap, stayed inside the baseball.
Power: 76 mph exit velocity from the tee.

7. Joshua Bell, St. Laurence (IL), 2022
