This week we began our analysis of the Underclass Showcase from October 23. The Underclass Showcase was an open event to all 2019 and 2020 graduates. We will continue to break down the event throughout the week by position, featuring scouting reports and highlighting the top prospects at each position.
Catchers kicked things off earlier this week and today we take a look at the infielders in attendance. Jason Hodges who was listed as the top outfielder yesterday, takes home top honors once again. Hodges, stood out among the rest with his round of batting practice and overall athleticism.
The top 2019 and 2020 infielders are listed below.
TOP INFIELD PROSPECTS
1. Jason Hodges, OF/INF, Marist, 2019
6-foot-3, 185-pound, strong, physically advanced, athletically built, multi-positional prospect. Put himself on the map as one of the top 2019 prospects in Illinois. Ran a 6.95 laser-timed 60. Has a high ceiling offensively. Right-handed hitter with fluid rhythm, explosive bat speed and present pull power. Makes consistent hard, loud contact, ball jumps off his bat; 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, leg-kick timing trigger and good balance throughout. Defensively, worked out at first base and in the outfield. Ability to play both positions; fluid, quick feet and soft hands. Athletic defensive actions, has a bounce in his step and good body control. Long arm action, high ¾ slot, some accuracy and throws have carry; clocked at 76 mph across the infield and 81 mph from the outfield.
2. Josh Mrozek, SS, Providence Catholic, 2019
6-foot-1, 155-pound lean, athletic infielder. Ran one of the top 60 times of the event, 6.86 laser-timed. Offensively, highly projectable left-handed hitter. Smooth, loose, easy swing with fluid rhythm throughout. Uphill path, gap-to-gap approach and finishes off his backside. Balanced, relaxed setup, short stride and an 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, plays with a bounce in his step, quick feet, can make plays on the move, good body control, soft hands and throws from multiple slots; loose arm action, plays enough for the left-side of the infield, clocked at 79 mph. High follow 2019 left-handed hitting infielder.
3. Anthony Mangano, INF, Lake Zurich, 2020
5-foot-11, 150-pound infielder with a lean, athletic frame. Emerged as a high-follow left-handed bat in the class. Compact swing, present bat speed, a lot of loud hard contact and some quick twitch in swing. Fluid rhythm, line-drive approach, path works level and gets extension through contact. 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, quick and fluid footwork on the infield. Athletic fielding position, out in front of body, receptive hands. Short arm from a high ¾ slot and throws clocked at 71 mph. Also, ran a 7.23 laser-timed 60.
4. Damon Gladney, INF, Illiana Christian, 2019
6-foot-2, 160-pound, lean, athletically built, infielder. 7.15 laser-timed 60. Right-handed hitter, simple, loose, quick twitch in swing; 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Flashed bat speed, natural lift in swing and fluid rhythm throughout. Balanced setup, short toe tap stride. Defensively, athletically fielding position, soft hands, fluid footwork and plays under control. Throws from a ¾ to high ¾ slot, throws flashed accuracy and clocked at 77 mph across the diamond.
5. Jacob Mote, INF, Normal University, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound, infielder with an athletic, physically advanced, strong frame. Right-handed hitter, present bat speed and quick twitch in swing. Ball jumps off the bat, gap-to-gap approach; exit velocity clocked at 90 mph from a tee. Balanced open setup, leg-kick timing trigger and average balance throughout. Defensively, has a big arm across the diamond for his age; clocked at 85 mph across the diamond with carry and life. Steady hands and longer, gathered transfer. Also, ran a 7.15 laser-timed 60. High follow 2020 infielder.
6. Andrew Kim, INF, Libertyville, 2019
6-foot, 175-pound, strong, wide-shouldered, athletically built, left-handed hitting infielder. Left-handed bat is currently strongest tool. Strong, compact swing; 85 mph exit velocity. Bat stays level through the zone, flashed bat speed, uses the middle of the field, line-drive approach and good balance throughout. Defensively, steady hands and a quick transfer on the infield. Short arm, high ¾ slot and clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.26 laser-timed 60.
7. Brock Berry, INF, Lincoln-Way West, 2019
5-foot-11, 140-pound, long and lean right-handed hitting infielder. Ran a 7.23 laser-timed 60. Offensively, compact aggressive swing, bat speed, consistent hard contact and looseness throughout. Fluid rhythm and a line-drive, pull approach; 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, long, rangy movements on plays on the move. Steady, receptive hands, athletic fielding position. Arm works long and out of a high ¾ slot, flashed carry at 76 mph.
8. Nick Kosmetatos, INF, St. Francis, 2019
6-foot, 185-pound, right-handed hitting infielder with a strong, physically advanced frame. Offensively, strength through contact, ability to square up baseballs and flashed bat speed. Balanced setup, short stride, gap-to-gap approach with lift in swing and an 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, easy, athletic actions on the infield. Soft hands, fields out in front, body control and clean exchange. Clean arm, throws have carry, clocked at 81 mph across the infield. Also, ran a 7.62 laser-timed 60.
9. Joel Sarver, INF/RHP, Champaign Centennial, 2020
5-foot-11, 152-pound lanky two-way prospect. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, long, loose and clean arm action out of a ¾ slot. Smooth tall and fall delivery with minimal effort throughout. Fastball, sinking action, sat 75-77 mph. Feel for curveball, consistent 11/5 shape and ranged between 65-68 mph. Changeup, sink and fade action, 67-70 mph. Offensively, fluid right-handed hitter, level path through the zone and occasional hard contact; 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced open setup, long stride gets back to even, and a gap-to-gap approach. Defensively, worked out on the infield (have previously seen catch). Soft hands, fluid footwork and athletic fielding position. Throws flashed carry across the diamond at 77 mph. Also, ran a 7.87 60.
10. Nolan Tucker, SS/RHP, Hanover Central, 2019
5-foot-7, 135-pound, athletic, two-way prospect. Offensively, left-handed hitter, fluid rhythm, flashed a quick twitch, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 86 mph. Wide, slightly open setup, smooth load, leg lift. Defensively, soft hands, clean exchange, athletic actions. Short arm action from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 76 mph across the diamond. 7.56 runner in the laser timed 60.

Michael Bohlen, RHP/INF, Marian Catholic, 2019
6-foot-4, 180-pound, strong, athletically built two-way prospect. On the mound, tall and fall delivery, bouncing action at balance point, stays on-line and gets down the mound. Short arm action out of an over-the-top slot. Fastball, finishes with life through the zone, occasional arm-side-run, sat 79-80 mph. Changeup, sinking action at times, 67-69 mph. Curveball, slows arm speed, 12/6 shape and ranged between 58-62 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, with strength through contact and flashed bat speed; 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced closed setup, leg-kick timing trigger and average balance through contact. Defensively, frame profiles well at first base. Feel for the position and steady hands. Jack Brannigan, OF/SS, Marist, 2019
6-foot, 165-pound, multi-positional prospect. Offensively, strong, right-handed hitter. Pull-side approach, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 84 mph from a tee. Closed setup, leg lift timing trigger. Defensively, worked out in the infield and outfield. More natural in the outfield. Fluid footwork, clean exchange, flashed athletic actions in the outfield. Michael Chialdikas, INF, Lake Zurich, 2019
6-foot, 140-pound, lean, left-handed hitting infielder with long levers. Offensively, looseness in swing, uphill path and uses the whole field. Balanced setup, pre-pitch load, short stride and finishes on his backside. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, steady receptive hands, funnels to release. Kyle Colbert, 1B/OF, Morgan Park, 2020
6-foot,141-pound, multi-positional player. Defensively, worked out at first base and in the outfield. Showed more natural at first. Defensively arm action is short, high ¾ slot, played at 70 mph out of the crouch. Pop times ranged 2.22-2.30. Showed best defensively on the infield. 5-foot-6, 114-pound, two-way player. Offensively, right-handed hitter, long, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered from 65 mph. Balanced setup with a short stride.
