On Tuesday, June 7, the PBR Illinois staff kicked off our summer tour with the Underclass Open, held at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois. Previously touted as the Underclass Trials, this event has been a staple on our summer calendar since 2014. It routinely provides us an opportunity to check see prospects prior to the summer circuit kicking off, and this year’s event featured players from the 2024-to-2026 grad classes.

In the week that followed this event, we produced post-event analysis that includes performance highlights inside of our Quick Hits story, a look at the traditional stats measured within our Statistical Analysis piece, batted-ball and pitch data compiled in TrackMan Files, swing metrics captured on the Blast Motion Board, and sight scores from an athletic perspective tracked on the Vizual Edge Scoreboard.

The standout arm from the Underclass Open was 6-foot-4, 180-pound, long-limbed, easy-armed RHP Bryce Koch (Barrington, 2024) - who landed a spot in Team Illinois for the Future Games thanks to his eye-opening 'pen. Koch brings all kinds of upside to the mound with a clean delivery, compact arm and easy mid-to-upper 80’s velocity. Koch also spun a slider in the mid-70’s and changeup at 77-80 mph with feel for the bottom of the zone. The best days are still ahead for this upside 2024 multi-sport athlete (also plays quarterback).

There were a trio of right-handed 2025 arms worth noting; Owen Walsh (Saint Ignatius), Aiden Elliott (Champaign Central) and Jacob Parr (Montini Catholic). Walsh has a fluid delivery, the ball comes out of his hand clean, he touched 80 mph and he flashed two above-average secondary offerings. Elliott has a strong frame, clean over-the-top arm action with a fastball at 81.5 mph and a firm downer breaking ball at 71-73 mph. Parr has a clean, easy arm and fastball topped at 80.2 mph.

Two 2024s of note were New Trier products; RHP Jack Wilson and LHP Beau McBride. Wilson attacks the zone with a fastball around 80 mph and throws two aggressive breaking balls with above-average action. McBride has a strong, physical frame, loose arm, low-80’s fastball and flashed depth on his breaking ball.
