Top Prospect - St. Louis: Preview

By Illinois Staff

Tuesday, June 4, will mark the third annual Top Prospect - St. Louis event, an invite-only showcase held in Edwardsville. The event will be hosted at Roy E. Lee Field, home to the Cougars of SIU-Edwardsville, and will feature some of the state’s best 2020 prospects, predominantly from central and southern Illinois and Missouri.

The Top Prospect events are always some of the summer’s most heavily attended events, with college recruiters keeping a close eye on Tuesday’s results. Forty-six prospects on last year’s roster are committed to play at the next level, and 65 players on the 2017 roster are committed, too.

Some standouts from last years event include RHP Andrew Pogue (Dunlap; Illinois commit), who was up to 91 mph on the mound, and LHP Cameron Edmonson (Rochester; Indiana State), who’s own fastball touched 88 mph. Offensively, RHP/1B Nick Gilhaus (Normal Community; Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and OF Jake Grauberger (Lee’s Summit West, MO; Johnson County CC) turned heads with their performances.

This year, there’s plenty of high-level uncommitted talent to look out for. Chase Mason (Washington), Lucas Ryan (Chatham-Glenwood), and Drew Stengren (Cary-Grove) are three intriguing catchers to watch from Illinois, with Mason ranking in No. 95 on the state’s Class of 2020 board. Caleb Pyrz (Champaign Central) is a two-way player who has shown repeated, hard line-drive contact with versatility defensively.. Josh Kirnbauer (Andrew) is a physical 3B/OF who had a big spring with the bat. Blake Donnan (Taylorville) is a physically advanced right-hander who stands at 6-foot-5 and has run his fastball into the mid 80s. Lukas Kim (Conant) is another righty with a mid-80s fastball, who has touched 86 mph in the past.
