Team Illinois: Workout Day Highlights

Steve Nielsen
Wisconsin and Illinois Scouting Supervisor

Day 1 of the Future Games is a marathon of a workout day, and for Team Illinois it was particularly record-breaking. Starting with the 60-yard dash, OF Nicky Giamarusti (Notre Dame, 2021) blazed the turf running a 6.22 60, a personal best and a Future Games record, shattering the previous best of 6.43 by Justin Turk (Sickles HS, FL) in 2017.

In fact, Giamarusti ran two 60’s that broke the previous record. After getting out of the gate with a 6.27 in his initial run, Giamarusti was asked to run it again and one-upped himself with a 6.22.

Staying on the theme of record-breaking numbers, another Future Games best was taken down by an Illinois product in the exit velocity. OF Alex Stanwich (Lincoln-Way East) a 2022 graduate is taking part with Team Select this weekend and destroyed the exit velocity station with a 106 mph exit velocity from the tee. Stanwich beat Nick Neal’s (Radleman HS, NC) 2018 record-setting swing of 104 mph with a top of 106 mph.

Stanwich’s complete line of a 106 exit velocity, 6.82 in the 60 and 93 mph arm strength from the outfield was one of the best overall performances of the entire day.

Andrew Jiminez (St. Charles North, 2021) had one of the better statistical days of any prospect at the Future Games. Jiminez was one of eight players to top the century mark in exit velocity with a cool 100 mph from the tee. While also running a top 15 60 time at 6.62 and throwing it 85 mph across the diamond, the top infield velocity of all Team Illinois prospects.

In the outfield, while Stanwich had a top five-arm (93 mph) overall at the event. Team Illinois’ Isaiah Thompson (Sacred Heart Griffin, 2021) was in the upper echelon of outfield velocity topping out at 90 mph. Thompson also went on to post a 6.93 in the 60 and 91 mph exit velocity from the tee. Watch for Thompson to use that arm strength on the mound later this week.

Behind the dish, Ty Batusich (Joliet West, 2021) showed a premium arm out of the crouch at 82 mph, good for a 1.93-2.04 pop time. Batusich’s 82 mph was second overall on the day by all prospects, topped by only two other catchers who touched 83 mph out of the crouch.
