DOWNERS GROVE, IL – In a West Suburban Conference crossover game, with cross-town bragging rights, Downers Grove South posted a convincing 8-2 victory over rival Downers Grove North on Thursday afternoon on the Mustangs’ campus.

South got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame, when junior centerfielder Corey Vondra scored on senior first baseman Zach Radde’s RBI single past third base.  South added two more runs in the bottom of the third, with Vondra in the mix again scoring on junior catcher Danny Oriente’s RBI single through the right side. Oriente and Vondra both finished 3-for-4 on the day, with Vondra scoring three runs.

Pitching with a lead, senior lefthander Danny Kasher was in command all day. Kasher allowed just five hits and two earned runs (both coming in the seventh), while striking out six, without walking a better. In his complete game effort, the southpaw consistently pounded the zone, throwing 62 of his 81 pitches for strikes, and also threw first pitch strikes to 21 of the 27 hitters he faced.

The Mustangs added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Radde and senior designated hitter Joe LaCivita. They pushed three more runs across in the sixth to make the final 8-2. Robert Justus, Joey Engel, and Radde all had two hit days, joining Vondra and Oriente in the offensive attack.

Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Andrews took the loss for North, allowing six earned runs in his five innings of work with three strikeouts and one walk. Senior second baseman Myles Farley had an RBI double in the seventh and senior centerfielder Brett Pyburn also added an RBI single for the Trojans’ two runs.

Downers Grove South improves to 15-3 on the season, 8-0 in the West Suburban Gold. The Mustangs square off with Hinsdale South today at 4:30 at Hinsdale South. The two squads meet again on Saturday at 2 PM at Hinsdale South again. Downers Grove North drops to 14-7 on the year.
