Every Friday National Scouting Supervisor Nathan Rode provides a roundup of insider recruiting information and commitments throughout the PBR coverage area: The Buzz. CLICK HERE to take a look at this week’s National Buzz. With that in mind, let’s take an in depth look at the Illinois prospects who have committed to colleges, with detailed scouting information.
Brandon Petersen, RHP, Waubonsie Valley, 2016
Western Michigan
2.15.15 - 6-foot-2, 220-pound left-handed pitcher impresses with three pitch feel highlighted by 81-82 mph with plus arm side run, occasional sink from long, loose, high ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Easy effort throughout delivery, tall/fall delivery, toe up at balance point, shoulders work slightly uphill, works slightly across body, adds to deception, doesn’t affect command. 67-70 mph curveball thrown with 2/8 shape, occasional late break. 74-75 mph changeup is a plus pitch, plus feel for locating it with late sinking action to his arm side. Petersen has a large frame but an extremely loose and athletic arm action. He’s a high follow prospect over the next two seasons.
Jon Tieman, RHP, Prairie Ridge, 2016
Valparaiso University
5.29.15 - Saw improvement over start nine days ago. Fastball sat 80-83 topping out at 84 mph. Curveball sat 68-70 topping out at 71 mph. Curveball showed tighter rotation and 12-6 shape with good depth. Throws a lot of strikes working away with everything. Spots up fastball gloveside very well.
Jared Jones, RHP, Joliet Catholic, 2016
St. Xavier University
2.16.15 - 6-foot-1, 165-pound, right-handed pitcher. Long, Lanky, projectable frame. On the mound works exclusively out of the stretch from a high ¾ arm angle, with regular effort. Tall and fall, online delivery, with some rhythm. Threw fastball for strikes and showed sinking action that should induce a lot of groundballs. Fastball sat 78-79 topping out at 80 mph. Curveball showed occasional 11-5 shape and sat 62-66 mph. Changeup with sink action for strikes sat 68-69 mph.
Matt Collins, SS, Carmel Catholic, 2016
Cornell University
6/18/15 - 6-foot-1, 175-pound, right-handed hitting shortstop with an athletic frame. Currently ranked No. 99 in the Illinois Class of 2016. Defensively has a short, loose arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry. Soft hands with a quick, clean exchange. Easy, fluid actions. Athletic fielder who plays thru the ball. Took one of the best defensive rounds of the event. Threw 84 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with a short stride. Up the middle approach with fluid rhythm. Lind drive hitter with a level swing path and extension. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.22.
Max Neilson, RHP, Cary-Grove, 2016
McHenry County College
