Every Friday National Scouting Supervisor Nathan Rode provides a roundup of insider recruiting information and commitments throughout the PBR coverage area: The Buzz. CLICK HERE to take a look at this week’s National Buzz. With that in mind, let’s take an in depth look at the Illinois prospects who have committed to colleges, with detailed scouting information.
Jacob Curry, RHP, Pontiac, 2016
Southeastern CC
7.8.15 - 5-foot-10, 175-pound solidly built left-handed hitting third-baseman and right-handed pitcher. At the plate, hits from an open, tall setup. Starts with a slight leg lift and long stride. Has a gap-to-gap approach, bat stays flat through the zone. Linear backside and shows balance throughout the swing; 81 mph exit velocity off the tee and ran a 4.62 home-to-first. Defensively, was clocked at 85 mph across the infield, showing plenty of arm strength to play the left side of the infield. In game play, he displayed fluid, quick feet with a clean exchange. On the mound, Curry operates from an over-the-top slot with a long, quick, athletic arm. Fastball ranged between 83-86 mph; when down in the zone, fastball had some run and sink. Change-up was his second best offering on this day, sitting 74-75 mph. Change-up is thrown with fastball arm speed; flashes run and sink; quality secondary pitch with swing and miss potential. Threw primarily fastballs and change-ups in his outing. Did throw a couple of breaking balls in his warmup that had sharp 11/5 shape, tight spin and feel.
Sam Faith, SS, St. Charles North, 2017
University of Oregon
Future Games 2015 - Well-proportioned 6-foot-2, 195-pound athletic switch-hitting infielder. Faith impressed at the Future Games for Team Illinois with his versatility and ability to play any infield position. On showcase day he worked out as a middle infielder but projects more at a corner position at the next level, due to his physical nature. Also, looks as though he will likely outgrow a middle infield spot. Defensively, works from a high ¾ slot, short arm action and some effort on his throws clocked at 83 mph across the infield. Athletic actions, feet work well and maintained body control going to his left or right. Offensively, the switch hitter looks slightly more natural hitting from the right side, recorded a 90 mph exit velocity. Starts from a balanced, athletic setup and short stride. Has an uphill path from both sides of the plate. Maintains balance throughout contact. In game one of the Future Games had an RBI double. Also was 4.39 down the line in game two on a groundout to second base. Ran a 7.12 60 yard dash. Versatile athlete that brings a lot to the table and should be a high follow in the 2017 class.
Cam Fowler, LHP, Moline, 2016
Nebraska-Omaha
2.15.15 - 6-foot-3, 190-pound lanky left-handed pitcher works from a short, high ¾ arm slot, toe up at balance point, drop/drive type delivery, separates hands outside knee at balance point, level shoulders throughout delivery, lands slightly closed at balance point. Fastball sat 78-80 mph, curveball flashed 12/6 shape from 67-69 mph. Cutter/slider was thrown from 71-74 mph, and also featured 70-73 mph changeup.
Sam Alender, RHP, Staunton, 2016
Harding University
1/20/14 – Alender, a lanky 6-foot-4 182-pounder showed his ability as a two-way player with good skill in the field and on the mound. He has a loose, easy arm action with a ¾ delivery. He had good balance and rhythm getting down the mound. His fastball had good run at 77-79 MPH and was consistently down in the strike zone. He shows an 11/5 breaking ball with late break at 69-71 MPH. He throws his change-up with near fastball arm speed at 71-75 with good sink. The movement that Alender gets on is change-up and fastball will produce batters to swing and miss. As he continues to develop, he has the ability to increase velocity.
John Rohde, RHP, Jacobs, 2016
Indiana Wesleyan
