Plainfield North Downs No. 24 Oswego
April 27, 2021
No. 24 Oswego hosted Plainfield North on Tuesday afternoon for game two of their Southwest Suburban Conference series. Plainfield North used a big five-run fourth inning to pull away from Oswego, eventually winning 9-6.
The big five-run inning for Plainfield North was a bit of a microcosm for the rest of the game. A number of free passes and an error helped Plainfield North accumulate their five runs. The inning saw five free passes (two walks, three hit by pitches) and an infield error. Junior Brandon Bak walked with the bases loaded to push the first run across of the frame. Senior Jake Rock followed up with a fielder's choice that scored a run. The following hitter, senior Alex Brodie, delivered one of the two hits in the frame, an RBI single to left field.
Plainfield North (5-0) scored another run in the fifth inning on an RBI double to left-center field by Rock and tacked on another in the seventh on an RBI single back up the middle by Bak. In total Plainfield North collected four hits on the day to score their nine runs. They were helped by three Oswego errors, eight walks and four hit-by-pitches.

Oswego (5-2) got off to the early lead thanks to a four-run bottom of the third inning. The big swing of the inning was off the bat of senior McKendree commit, Gavin Arseneau. Arseneau drove a line shot into the teeth of the wind in left-center field which resulted in a bases-clearing double. Oswego would go on to score another run in the fourth and one in the sixth but that was all. Oswego collected six hits on the day and walked eight times.
Austin Simmons came out of the bullpen for Plainfield North in the bottom of the third inning and settled things down for the Tigers. The unsigned senior left-hander ended up finishing the game and picking up the win, going five innings, scattering four hits, one earned run, while striking out one. Simmons stayed out of the middle of the plate, mixed his offerings throughout and continuously changed his looks and timing with runners on base, successfully picking off one runner at first base as well.
The 9-6 win gives Plainfield North their second straight 9-6 win over Oswego and they will go for the sweep of the three-game set on Thursday when the two teams match up again at Plainfield North.
