PBR IL - John A Logan JC Scout Day: Takeaways

On Thursday, October 7, the PBR Illinois staff traveled to Marion to host the John A. Logan Scout Day at Rent One Ballpark. The event featured 30 uncommitted prospects with a majority of them hailing from Illinois. 

As the week has rolled on, our staff has already published a handful of post-event content pieces, such as a Statistical Analysis, TrackMan Files, and Blast Motion Board.

We'll now conclude our post-event coverage with several standout performers from the day, highlighted below. 

PITCHING STANDOUTS:     

+ Of the ten arms the Volunteers rolled out, seven were 90+, including top cheese from RHP Terry Busse who sat at 93 mph and touched 94.8 mph. The 6-foot-4 right-hander also spun a 81-82 mph slider in the 2500+ RPM range. Others who touched 90+ mph or better included RHP Ben Thompson, LHP Josh Dima, RHP Ryan Tressler, RHP Jackson Lee, RHP Mitchel Hemmen, and RHP Kristian Asbury.  

  

+ Thompson showed the most electric heater with a velocity up to 93.7 while averaging 23.5” of IVB for big ride. This past spring the 6-foot righty struck out 47 in 26.1 IP (16.1/9). He is uncommitted for next season.      

+ If you’re looking for left-handed heat, Dima was that guy with a fastball up to 93.3. He filled the zone at a 50% clip while mixing in a 76-78 mph breaking ball and a low-spin changeup (1600s rpm) in the low-80s.

+ And last, but not least, 6-foot-4, 223-pound RHP Nate Thomas showed high-80s velo with low-spin, sinking movement. His fastball touched 87.5 mph and averaged 1540 rpm of spin. Last season Thomas pitched 76.2 innings and allowed just 57 hits for a 3.40 ERA. He is committed to USC-Upstate for next season.


POSITIONAL STANDOUTS:

+ If seven of 10 pitchers touching 90+ wasn’t enough, the Vols showed out four hitters who registered a max exit velocity of 99+, including two-way talent Ben Thompson (102.5), C Cole Christman (101.65), OF Jason Hodges (99.49), and C Jacob Schroeder.  

+ The Vols also showed a little speed as well with seven players at 6.86 or better in the sixty. This group was led by unsigned sophomore OF Grant Trinkle who jetted down the turf with a 6.34. Right behind Trinkel was unsigned sophomore INF Tyler Heckert, who cruised to a 6.56, followed by UTL Tre Hondras (6.65), OF Khyle Radcliffe (6.70), OF Jason Hodges (6.82), C Cole Christman (6.83), and OF Brian Winters (6.86).  

 

+ Radcliffe also impressed with all four of his throws from right field registering at 95 mph.

+ Overall, the top tooled overall prospect was sophomore center fielder Trinkle who, in addition to his sizzling sixty, threw 90 mph from the outfield, maxed with a top EV of 96.78 and a max distance of 375’.

+ Unsigned shortstop Heckert also performed well with athletic actions, good body control and a top throw of 89 mph across the infield. At the plate he registered a max EV of 96 mph.
