NEW LENOX, IL – It was a Catholic League battle between No. 7 St. Laurence and No. 9 Providence, not only that but we were set to be in for a treat with two hard throwing senior righties matching up on the bump with similar repertoires.
Recently committed Zach Lewis (Wabash Valley CC) for the Vikings and uncommitted Yianni Pavlopoulos for the Celtics seemed to be a great matchup on paper, but that’s why we go to the yard everyday. It was hardly that as Lewis dominated the Celtics and Pavlapoulos was done after just three innings as the Vikings cruised to a 12-1 road victory.
Both Lewis and Pavlopoulos got off to shaky starts as the Vikings scored once in their first frame and Lewis recorded two base on balls in his first inning of work. However, Lewis would settle in and start to command his fastball much better as he went on to surrender just three hits the rest of the way.
In Lewis’ six innings of work the big righty rarely dipped below 86 mph and sat at a comfortable 87-88 mph for all six innings, even touching 90 mph in the first inning. Lewis pitched predominately with his fastball as the Celtic offense just had no answer for it.
The Vikings broke the door open in the fourth scoring four runs on three hits and a walk.
St. Laurence would hang another four spot in the sixth as Brad Wood contributed an RBI single that scored Kevin White who previously doubled.
Wood added another RBI single in the seventh and later scored on a Michael Kornacker double which ended the scoring and tallied a final score of 12-1. Alex Hitney would finish the game for the Vikings working a scoreless seventh inning.
Kevin White finished with three hits while Wood, Kornacker, and Zach Lewis each added two.
