Illinois Recruiting Notebook

Several more 2014 prospects have named their schools recently. A look at who’s going where:

+ Mario Tursi, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound SS from Glenbrook South HS, has committed to SIU-Edwardsville. Ranked No. 74 in Illinois’ 2014 class, Tursi is one of the top defensive middle infielders in the state. At the Preseason All-State Showcase, Tursi was clocked at 85 mph across the infield while showing high-level defensive actions.

+ Connor Etheridge, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound RHP from Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin HS, has committed to Belmont. Etheridge, who on Monday was featured as the Unsigned Senior Spotlight, was one of the top pitchers at the PBR Unsigned Senior Games in early August. At the event, Etheridge sat at 84-86 mph with his fastball. Etheridge is currently ranked No. 164 in Illinois’ 2014 class.

+ Zac Taylor, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound RHP/OF from Downers Grove South HS, has committed to McNeese State. Taylor showed well at the PBR Top Prospect Showcase in June. On the mound, he sat 83-86 mph with his fastball to go along with a 69-71 mph curveball. Positionally, he ran a 6.70 60 and was clocked at 78 mph from the outfield. Taylor is currently ranked No. 105 in Illinois’ 2014 class.

+ Joe Provenzano, a switch-hitting MIF from Downers Grove North HS, has also committed to McNeese State. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Provenzano is currently ranked No. 153 in Illinois’ 2014 class.

+ Kevin Coppin, a left-handed hitting C/INF from Lisle HS, has committed to Concordia. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Coppin helped lead Lisle to the Class 2A state championship, hitting in the middle of the lineup and serving as the starting shortstop as a junior. Coppin is currently ranked No. 146 in Illinois’ 2014 class.

+ Jonathan Reimer, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound RHP/INF from Lake Forest HS, has committed to Northwestern.

+ Zack Thomas, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound left-handed hitting OF from Joliet West HS, has committed to Chicago State.
