CLASS 4A SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS SUPER

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN
Moline 7, Joliet West 6
Moline (25-12) rallied past the Tigers and won in walk-off fashion in Bloomington. Joliet West scored six runs in the third inning to open up a 6-0 Tiger lead. Moline clawed back with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Maroon junior Brett Newberg walked, the 10th walk allowed by Tiger pitchers, to lead off the inning. Senior Brandon Eklof’s sac-bunt moved Newberg into scoring position at second. Newberg would move up to third on a passed ball. Junior Austin Fancher would send Newberg across the plate and everyone home with his walk-off single to left. Sophomore Mitch Owens led the Maroon attack with a single and three RBI.

ANDREW
Providence 5, No. 25 Sandburg 3
Providence (24-14) scored four times in the second inning and hung on to defeat the 25th-ranked Eagles in Tinley Park. LSU-bound Jake Godfrey (5-5) fired a four-hitter at Sandburg (24-9) with seven strikeouts. The future Bayou Bengal hurler can hit too, as evidenced by his double, triple and two big Celtic RBI. Lewis University-bound Cam Galgano led the Celtic attack with a 4-4 game with a triple and two RBI.

GLENBROOK SOUTH
No. 7 Mundelein 9, No. 9 Glenbrook South 3
Mundelein (35-2) smashed the Titans in Glenview. With the win the Mustangs will face North Suburban Conference Lake Division champion and rival Libertyville (33-5) at 10 on Saturday in Glenview.

OSWEGO
No. 17 Plainfield North 3, Neuqua Valley 2
Plainfield North (28-8) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and won on a walk-off walk in Oswego. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Tiger sophomore Josh Garner ripped a leadoff single for North. Sophomore Jake Dunham’s sac-bunt moved Garner to second. Junior Jason Pacanowski singled home Garner with the tying run. Pacanowski cruised into second on the throw to the plate. Sophomore Zack Jarosz reached on an error and senior Matt Welch was intentionally walked to load the bases. Faced with the enormous pressure of not being able to walk junior Bryan VanDouser, the Neuqua Valley pitcher did just that on five pitches for the Tiger game-winner.

Downers Grove South 9, Waubonsie Valley 2
The West Suburban Conference Gold Division champs from Downers Grove South (27-8) thrashed the Warriors in the second game in Oswego. The Mustangs will square off with No. 17 Plainfield North (28-8) in Oswego at 10 on Saturday.

SCHAUMBURG SUPER

SCHAUMBURG
South Elgin 9, St. Charles North 1
South Elgin (24-10) supernovaed the North Stars in Schaumburg behind senior Ryan Nutof. Nutof fired a three-hitter for the Storm with nine punchouts. The lone North Star run was unearned. Nutof singled, homered and drove in two runs to lead the Storm attack.

LOYOLA
New Trier 4, Loyola 3
New Trier (21-17) slipped past North Shore rival Loyola in Glenview. Matt Boscow was 2-2 for the Trevians with an RBI. Grant Klenovich and Frank Nicholas each singled and plated a New Trier run. Trevian starting pitcher Drew Fischer (5-5) picked up the win and Trevian closer Andrew Earvolino nailed down the save.

CLASS 3A SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS SUPER

ROCHELLE
No. 19 Rockford Boylan 13, Rochelle 0
Rockford Boylan (28-6) flattened the Hubs in six-innings behind a one-hit shutout from Joe Ferhle, Ferhle struck out five and walked one. Ferhle went 3-3 at the plate with two RBI. Graham Smolinski hit a grand slam for the Titans and Andy Cropp added a solo-shot for the NIC-10 champions.

LINCOLN-WAY WEST

No.4 Lemont 7, Illiana Christian 1
Lemont (31-5) cruised past the Vikings behind a combined one-hitter from Charlie Wright and Garrett Acton. Wright (7-1) fired four hitless innings at the Vikings, allowing one unearned run to pick up the win. Acton allowed the hit in his three scoreless innings with five strikeout to close out the victory. Nick Wisz led the Indian attack with two singles and two RBI. LSU-bound Mike Papierski was 2-2 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Danny Dowiarz had three singles and an RBI for Lemont.

Manteno 3, Morgan Park 2
Manteno (23-13-1) slipped past the Chicago Public School champs from Morgan Park in New Lenox. Senior Drew Nichols and Jack Morgan combined on a three-hitter for the Panthers. Nichols allowed two runs and two hits to pick up the win while Morgan turned the lights out on the Mustangs with two scoreless innings in relief to nail down the save. Morgan led the Panther attack with a single and an RBI.

GLENBARD SOUTH

Montini 4, Riverside-Brookfield 2
Montini (24-9) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to break up a 2-2 game and go on to the victory in Glen Ellyn. After two out in the bottom of the sixth, Montini’s Jake Mencacci’s RBI triple would plate Eddie Bava, who reached on an error, with the lead run. the Broncos would pick up an insurance run on another R-B miscue. Sean Frontzak fired 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Broncos. Frontzak (5-2) allowed one hit with two strikeouts.

TROY-TRIAD
Mascoutah 9, Jerseyville 1
Mascoutah (31-6) crushed Jersey behind a combined four-hitter from Ryan Netemeyer and Austin Crist. Netemeyer pitched 5.1 innings, allowing a run and four hits to pick up the win. Crist fired 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the Indian victory. Netemeyer helped himself at the plate with a 2-2 day with three RBI.

MARIAN CENTRAL CATHOLIC
Gordon Tech 9, Vernon Hills 8
Gordon Tech (24-14) scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to stun the Cougars in Woodstock. After Vernon Hills had scored twice in the top of the seventh to take an 8-5 lead the Rams would erupt after two outs to pull out probably the biggest victory in Gordon Tech baseball history.

In the bottom of the seventh with two out, Tyler Sweat walked with the bases loaded to bring the Rams within 8-6. Grayson Sanchez ripped a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the game at eight. The Rams would win the game on a dropped fly ball by the Cougar outfield.
