No. 3 Joliet Catholic Academy 5, West Chicago 1
The Hilltoppers won their opener at Gordie Gillespie Field in Joliet behind Palm Beach Atlantic-bound RHP Kyle Polaski (1-0). Polaski fired five shutout innings at the Wildcats allowing two hits and striking out eight. JCA (1-0) junior SS Mitch Boe had two singles and two RBI to lead the Hilltopper attack. Purdue-recruit junior Nick Dalesandro tripled and drove home a pair for JCA. Rylan Bannon had a double and scored two runs, while Mike Quiram chipped in with a single and an RBI. On Monday at 4:30 the 15th-ranked Metamora Redbirds (5-0) invade Gillespie Stadium for a must-see showdown between two of the favorites for the 2014 Class 3A crown. No. 23 Peoria Notre Dame 3, No. Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 2
Peoria Notre Dame (2-2) won in dramatic fashion at Comstock Field in Springfield. The Fighting Irish rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to send SHG (4-1) to their first defeat of the season. With one out and two PND runners on first and second, sophomore Luke Shadid hammered a pitch over the head of the SHG centerfielder for a triple, scoring Nick Pudic who had singled and senior Mike Best who walked. Shadid would score the eventual game-winner on a 4-3 groundout off the bat of winning pitcher Truman Ralph. Ralph would shut down the Cyclones in the seventh and the Fighting Irish had a big win over the 9th ranked Cyclones.
No. 52 Barrington 7, Normal Community 5 (8 innings)
Barrington (3-1) won an extra-inning thriller over Normal Community (0-1) in Normal. Junior Mitch Pfeiffer won it for the Broncos with a huge two-run double, his second of the game, in the top of the eighth. Pfeiffer finished with three hits and three RBI. Senior C Jack Lenz singled, doubled and drove home two Bronco runs while Casey Dodge had two singles and an RBI. RHP Luke Johnson (1-0), who struck out the side in the seventh, picked up the win on the mound while Bronco closer senior RHP Daniel Kubiuk, nailed down the save with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth with a strikeout. John Megles had three singles and scored two runs to lead the host Ironmen. Luke McCaw doubled and drove home two Ironmen runs.
No. 52 Barrington 14, No. 22 Chatham Glenwood 4
Barrington (4-1) routed the Glenwood (2-1) to complete their sweep off their games at Normal Community High School in Normal, on Saturday. Jake Coon had a pair of doubles, homered and drove home three runs to lead the Bronco onslaught. Senior C Jack Lenz also plated three Bronco runs and had three hits including a double. Senior Daniel Kubiuk had two singles and two RBI while Casey Dodge chipped in with a single and an RBI.
