No. 9 Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin 10, Williamsville 1
SHG’s Belmont University-bound Connor Etheridge (1-0) fired four no-hit innings with six strikeouts to lead the Cyclones past the Bullets in the season-opener for both clubs. Louisville-bound C Mitch Trees drove in three Cyclone runs to give his batterymate all the support he would need. Senior 3B Ryne Elvers and senior Steve Sartore each had two hits and plated a run.
No. 29 O’Fallon 12, Alton Marquette 2
The Panthers’ first inning of the season did not start the way head coach Jason Portz
envisioned. A couple of defensive miscues led to a pair of unearned runs and a 2-0 deficit
to visiting Alton Marquette (0-1) after a half inning. Never fear. The Panther offense put a seven spot on the Blazier Park scoreboard in the first inning and rolled past Marquette 12-2 in the season-opener for both clubs.
McKendree University-bound Blake Deatheridge (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for O’Fallon (1-0) and helped himself at the plate with two doubles and two RBI. John A. Logan-bound Jeff Hahs singled,doubled and also plated a pair. SW Illinois-bound Collin Holton and sophomore Cam Bauer each singled and also drove a pair of runs.
No. 54 St. Joseph-Ogden 1, Monticello 0
In a game that had only five hits combined St.Joseph Ogden slipped past Monticello 1-0 behind RHP Hunter Hart. Hart drove home the lone run of the game on a groundout in the bottom of the fifth to give him the win on the mound. Hart fired five scoreless innings only allowing one hit with seven strikeouts. Spartan closer Brock Immke nailed down the save for Hart with two scoreless innings of relief allowing two hits with two punchouts.
No.65 Champaign Central 12, Kankakee 2
The Maroons opened up their 2014 season in style hammering Kankakee 12-2 in five innings on Wednesday. Sophomore C Joe Aeilts led the Champaign Central (1-0) attack with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. He also caught a fine game behind the plate for his batterymate ISU-bound RHP Alex Altmyer. Altmyer (1-0) fired three scoreless innings with six strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound.
DuQuoin 5, Benton 2
Senior Cam Mercier pitched and hit DuQuoin (1-0) to a season-opening victory in DuQuoin on Wednesday. Mercier (1-0) fired a seven hitter at Benton with six strikeouts. Cam helped himself at the plate with a 2-for-3 day including his first home run of the 2014 season and two RBI. Benton (1-1) was led by seniors Nate Higgins and Mat Buntin,who each had two hits and an RBI. Higgins had a double.
Jacksonville 13, Macomb 3
Jacksonville (1-0) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first and cruised past Macomb on Wednesday in the season-opener for both clubs. Crimson senior Kody Wood (1-0) allowed three unearned runs and three hits in his three innings of work to pick up the win on the mound. Freshman Adam Hillis fired three perfect innings in relief with four strikeouts. Wood singled, homered and plated three Crimson runs. Crimson leadoffman Tyler Ring had two singles, two RBI and scored four runs. Junior Matt Jackson had two hits and two RBI while senior Floyd Lomelino chipped in with a single and an RBI.
Carbondale 10, Trico 0
Carbondale (2-0) rolled past Trico behind their 5-foot-5 170 pound catcher John Nance. Nance who help lead the Terriers to their season-opening win over West Frankfort on Tuesday, had two hits and drove home three more runs as the Terriers ended this one in six innings with a three run fifth and sixth innings.
Troy-Triad 10, Effingham 0
The Trojans rolled past the Flaming Hearts in their season-opener on Wednesday. Senior 2B Matt Messinger went 3-for-3 with five RBI to lead Troy-Triad (1-0).Junior Nick Rosenthal also went 3-for-3 with three RBI.
Champaign Centennial 7, Effingham St. Anthony 5
The Chargers won their season-opener behind Austin Johnson,Jeff Lindgren, Dylan Grady and Brian Paul. Johnson pitched four innings and recorded all 12 outs via the strikeout. Lindgren went deep with a Charger mate aboard and Grady and Paul had five hits and four RBI combined.
Auburn 3, Springfield Lanphier 2
