MUNDELEIN, IL - The Wiegman brothers made a big splash last July when Andrew, then a rising sophomore, and his younger sibling, Ben, both verbally committed to Louisville, making them the first players to pledge to a school in Illinois’ 2019 and 2020 classes, respectively.

Now teammates at Carmel Catholic, the Wiegmans are well on their way to carving out another impressive path together, one that should benefit the Corsair program for years to come.

On Saturday, the brothers each served as catalysts for Carmel as it swept Marist, 6-4 and 12-1, in an East Suburban Catholic doubleheader.

Andrew Wiegman, an athletic 6-foot-3, 175-pound shortstop, got the Corsairs going as the team’s leadoff man in both games, going 3-for-5 with three walks, three RBI, three runs and a stolen base. He hit a two-run homer to left in the second inning of Game 1 to stake the Corsairs (7-2, 2-0) to a 5-0 advantage. He also led off Game 2 with a double to centerfield to spark Carmel’s six-run outburst. Ranked No. 3 in Illinois’ 2019 class and No. 57 overall, Andrew reached base seven times on the day.

Meanwhile, younger brother Ben Wiegman, who’s known more for his pitching prowess, is the Corsairs’ leading hitter batting in the three-hole. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound freshman went 4-for-6 on the day with a walk and hit by a pitch. Ben also earned the victory on the mound in the five-inning, mercy-rule Game 2. He pitched all five innings, allowing three hits, one run with six strikeouts and two walks. His fastball sat 86-88 mph in the first two innings and dipped to  83-85 later in the outing when the game was well out of reach. Ben is currently ranked No. 30 in the recently released Prep Baseball Report overall 2020 rankings.

Ben Wiegman wasn’t the only pitcher for the Corsairs to turn in a solid outing on the mound. Senior RHP Eddie Pietschmann went 6.1 innings in Game 1, allowing six hits, four runs, three of which were earned.The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Wisconsin-Oshkosh recruit struck out seven and walked two. Pietschmann also helped himself at the plate, blasting a three-run homer on a first-pitch elevated changeup in the first inning.

Junior CF Austin Ehren went 2-for-2 with a walk in Game 1, and added a run-scoring single and a walk in Game 2. Senior 3B Joey Lake led the offensive onslaught in Game 2, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, which included a bases-clearing double in the first inning, and three runs scored.

For Marist (3-8, 0-2), which was starting four sophomores and a freshman pitcher in Game 1, senior left-handed hitting OF Bryson Lewis hit a two-run homer and senior OF Elijah Hynes had a run-scoring double and two hits.
