After beating No. 2 Brother Rice on Friday afternoon, No. 15 Lyons Township shut out their second straight opponent, this time St. Charles East by the score of 3-0 on Saturday. Senior’s Michael Walsh and Brendan Lawry combined to strike out 16 Saints hitters in the shutout.

Walsh, a Yale commit, started on the mound for Lyons Township (2-0). The talented right-hander was on his game from the start, collecting 8 strikeouts in his first three innings and a total of 10 in his four-inning outing. Walsh scattered three hits and walked one. Walsh ran his fastball up to 88 mph multiple times early in the outing and was not shy in showing off his breaking ball, which is one of the best in the state. Walsh routinely buckled hitters and got swing-and-misses on his mid-70’s breaking ball that he was manipulating in shapes depending on the count and hitter.

Following Walsh on the mound, was Lawry, a big-bodied, left-handed pitcher committed to Waubonsee CC. Lawry has a loose arm from a ¾ slot and gets late arm-side-run on his fastball that topped at 85 mph and sat 81-84. Lawry mixed in a sweeping breaking ball to keep hitters off balance. In Lawry’s three innings of work he scattered two hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Lyons got on the board in the top of the first inning. With one out, third baseman, Danny Machaj singled to center field, stole second and later scored on an error. They tacked on two more in the second inning. Senior OF Nick Panos doubled to left-center field, Matt Schuler followed with a single and Machaj knocked in Panos with a sacrifice fly to center field. Schuler came around to score on an error by the right fielder. Those three runs were enough for Lyons as they held on for the 3-0 win. Schuler led the Lyons offensive attack going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Senior Alec Rupp had a strong outing for St. Charles East (0-1) out of the bullpen. Rupp went three shutout innings, scattering one hit, striking out five and walking two.

Junior Nick Schumann led the offensive attack for the Saints going 3-for-3 with a double.
