PBR Iowa strives to be the most comprehensive source of player information across the state. The Prep Baseball Report is the No. 1 resource for high school baseball in each state we cover through our variety of events, boots-on-the-ground scouting staff, daily coverage, and multimedia platforms. Our multimedia platforms and events work in tandem, ultimately creating the most powerful source of high school baseball promotion in each state. While other organizations take a national approach, our goal is to become the authoritative voice on the ground level of each state.

PBR: Why did you choose Southeastern CC?
SIMPSON: I felt the most comfortable with the coaches at SCC. My ultimate goal in the future is to play at the D1 level for a school with a great program. I have the desire to keep growing to further my development on the baseball field. The coaches at SCC understand my goals and want to help me achieve them.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
SIMPSON: I was looking into Iowa, Northwest Missouri State, DMACC, and a few others.
PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?
SIMPSON: I believe they saw me at the Iowa Junior Showcase in 2017 but they’ve also come to watch me play several times. They were great about contacting me, working with me on my visit, explaining their program in detail to me and just touching base regularly. They wanted to make sure that all of my family’s questions were answered about their program. Through our conversations, I felt they truly cared about me on and off the field. Coach Schulte is someone that I respect and trust.
PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
SIMPSON: Yes, I am very glad the process is over now. I feel like I’ve picked the right school for me and the stress is gone. It can be a lot to deal with as a student athlete and to throw in the recruiting process demands on top of everything else you’re doing can be too much at times. I’m glad I can move forward focusing on what I need to do now in my senior year of high school.
PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
SIMPSON: I had great communication with the coaches and really like them. SCC had the best facilities for a JUCO in Iowa like the new indoor facility being worked on and will be ready for use this winter. They also have a lot of new improvements at the school in dorms and classrooms. It’s also close to home for my family to come watch me play. SCC was just a better fit overall for me.
PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
SIMPSON: My family has been a big part of my baseball journey to get to where I am today. My dad has been helping me perfect my swing and approach at the plate since I was 2 years old or when I could walk. He has dedicated so much of his time and shared his knowledge of the game with me. My dad pushes me the hardest of anyone to continually get better at things but I don’t mind it at all. I’m thankful for my parents and grandparents to help provide a way for me to travel and compete at a high level. I also appreciate my high school coaches who allow me to come early or stay late to practices if I want to work on something.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
SIMPSON: It was more difficult than I expected it to be, and hard to know what to do or what you’re allowed to do. I think I have grown in the process. I put a lot of pressure on myself this year because I lost out on a very important recruiting year as a sophomore due to my ACL injury. The recruiting process is hard enough for anyone to go through but adding in the ACL injury just put more stress into it. For those that don’t know, I tore my ACL during a varsity football game in September 2016, it was a devastating blow to me at the time and something difficult to come back from. My hopes and plans for my sophomore year immediately had to change and I felt like I had a lot of ground to make up my junior year. I was still getting into the physical conditioning needed to perform at my best by the spring of my Sophomore year. I came back to full contact sports just 6 months after my surgery. But, ACL rehab is one thing but it’s not where you stop. The rehab part is where you start the journey to get back to where you were before the injury occurred. The conditioning and weight training program I have been on since graduating physical therapy have been a big part to where I am today.
PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
SIMPSON: We’ve talked about hitting for power, working on improving my defensive skills at first base, and being a powerful bat in the middle of the order. Of course nothing is a guarantee, I know I need to come in working hard and taking everything seriously to earn my spot on the field.
PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
SIMPSON: My USSSA 10U AA team won the Iowa state championship. It was a fun ride.
PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
SIMPSON: Facing pitcher Max Alba because he locates the ball extremely well and has a variety of pitches. Also playing against Jarred Kelenic this past spring with the Hitters vs PG games.
