Team Georgia 16u: Game 3 Recap

Prep Baseball Georgia

Team Georgia finishes up their week vs. Texas at 12:30 on field 10 after 2 tough games vs. Tennessee (W) and Florida (L) earlier in the week. Jack Richerson got the ball for Georgia and opened up with the fastball sitting 87-90 T:91 (2500+ RPMs), as well as a changeup in the low 80s, a tight slider (75-77), and a curveball in the low 70s.

Richerson worked a scoreless first after surrendering a leadoff 2B. He came back with a strikeout looking, a flyout (F9), and a groundout (5-3) to put up a zero in the first for Team Georgia. Martin Shelar got things going for Georgia in the bottom of the 1st with a 1 out walk. Shelar advanced to second on a wild pitch with 2 outs. That was it for Georgia, and things were even at 0-0 after the first. Richerson came back out for the second and continued right where he left off. After a leadoff walk, that was it after a quick 3 outs from a flyout (F9), a strikeout looking, and a nice diving catch in center by teammate Malachi Washington to put up yet another 0. Trevor Condon found himself on base in the bottom of the 2nd with a 1 out walk. That was it though, for Georgia in the bottom of the inning, and it was still 0-0 after 2.

Fellow teammate Reid Gainous came in to relieve Richerson after two solid frames. Gainous came out living 87-89 T:90 with the fastball and complemented it with an upper 70s slider (2800+ RPMs).

Gainous worked out of some trouble but also picked up a strikeout looking, and his fellow catcher Chip Glogorski threw out a runner trying to grab 2nd.

Texas grabbed 1 and took the lead ½ through the 3rd, 1-0. Will Myhand found himself on base with a 1 out infield 1B. That was it, though, for Team Georgia, and Texas took the early lead after 3 (1-0). Gainous was back out for the 4th for Georgia. After a few tough scenarios and some balls that found holes, Texas put up a few to make it 6-0 after the top of the 4th. Keon Johnson continued his stellar week at the plate with another knock, this time going backside for a 1B. That was it for Georgia in the bottom of the 4th after some tough at bats.

Sebastian Walsh came in out of the pen to begin the top of the 5th for Georgia. Walsh came out attacking with all pitches. The fastball was consistently 84-86 T:87. The changeup was in the mod to upper 70s and tunneled well off of the fastball, and to finish it off, he threw a strong curveball in the mid 70s.

Walsh worked a clean frame, recording outs from a flyout (F8) and 2 strikeouts (looking and swinging). Martin Shelar led off the top of the 5th with a hit by pitch to try and spark a rally. Shortly after, fellow teammate A.J Rice found himself on base from a hit by pitch as well. Reiston Durham absolutely got hold of one going backside for a 3 run home run to cut the lead in half for Georgia (3-6).

Trevor Condon then found himself next at bat, drawing a 1 out walk. Next at bat, Ashton Roache found himself on base while Condon was in motion for a perfectly executed hit and run as he turned on it to right for a loud 1B.

That was it for Georgia in the bottom of the 5th, but they grabbed a few to make it 6-3 Texas. Walsh was back out for his 2nd inning of work in the top of the 6th. He in fact put up another big 0 for Georgia, only allowing 1 baserunner. He recorded 2 outs from strikeouts (both swinging) and a groundout (6-3). Team Georgia put up a few tough at bats in the bottom half of the 6th, but could not find anything to show for it.

Vernon Woodard was handed the ball to relieve Walsh in the top half of the 7th. Fastball was working in the mid 80s (84-86) with some sink, he also threw a curveball with some tilt in the low 70s, and an upper 70s changeup.

Woodard worked a solid 7th, only allowing 1 run. He got his outs from a fielders choice (6-4), a flyout (F4), and a big throwout to third from his catcher, Branson Crawford. Halfway through the 7th, Texas had the lead, 7-3. Malachi Washington got the bottom half of the 7th going with a leadoff walk. A few pitches later, Washington advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Deion Cole walked himself next at bat to bring some pressure with runners on 1st and 2nd 0 outs. Then, just one pitch later, both Washington and Cole advanced on another wild pitch. Caden Dawson then drew himself a 4 pitch walk, making it bases loaded 0 outs. Keon Johnson picked up an RBI on a fielders choice to bring home Washington, making it 4-7 with just 1 out and runners on the corners. A.J Rice picked up a big 2 out 2B in the left center gap to bring home 2 more, cutting the Texas lead to just 1 (6-7).

That was it for Georgia in that inning, but they picked up 3 more. Woodard was back out for the top of the 8th and looking for a quick inning. A quick inning was exactly what happened, as Woodard got a 1-2-3 inning via a strikeout (looking) and 2 flyouts (F3 and F7). Team Georgia came up in the bottom of the 8th with their last chance down 6-7. Ashton Roachie’s speed came into play as he beat out a hard groundball in the infield for a 2 out knock to continue the inning. Ethan England came up clutch with a big 2 strike 2B to tie the game, bringing home Roachie (7-7).

England advanced on a wild pitch, bringing him to 3rd.

Unfortunately, that was it for Team Georgia, tying Texas 7-7. Reiston Durham received Player of the Game honors after a big time performance. They battled all week against some of the toughest competition in the country, finishing 1-1-1 in the 2024 Future Games at Lakepoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Georgia.
