Summer Uncommitted Spotlight: Carson Vick
August 19, 2024
Uncommitted. One of the quiet rising stars from the summer, showing a high IQ behind the plate and flashing multiple defensive tools while also displaying an all-field approach with pop and whippy power in the barrel. 5-foot-9, 175-pound frame, showed versatility and athleticism with good blocking skills and a quick arm. Shows an advanced approach at the plate, great pitch recognition and a disciplined eye, makes for a hard out. Won Player of the Game during our Southeast Select tournament after a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a deep fly ball that split the gap in right-center. Slide step/toe-tap load with slight hand movement to initiate his load. Syncs load into his swing with ease and explodes his hands through the zone with power. Agressive intent with every swing. Quick hitter out of the box, shows hustle down the line and in the field. Showed development and advancement throughout his time at Prep Baseball events this summer, a high follow into the off-season and pre-season for a solid Hillgrove Hawks high school squad.
Scouting Report
Uncommitted. Strong, physical and powerful 5-foot-9, 175-pound frame. Displays a strong lower-half with speed and quickness in the arsenal. Ran out an infield single for a base hit, then recognizes the off-speed and smokes one into deep right field. Just a tad wider than shoulder width base, and a small leg-kick load that generates a strong back-half swing that maintains power throughout. Good pitch recognition and has an aggressive mentality in the box. A wall behind the dish with fluid movements; quickness and bounce, ready to block and flashes the sub 2.0 second pop-time on a high IQ, back-pick play.
The uncommitted backstop continues to build a strong well-rounded profile by the day. Starting at the plate, Vick utilizes a linear bat path with above-average bat speed and generating a ton of force from his lower half. Ability to be consistently on-time with feel for the barrel allows Vick to use the whole field well. Found a loud barrel back up-the-middle for a knock in this outing, with multiple other loud contact that just couldn't find grass. Behind the plate, Vick shows good athleticism both off a knee and in the crouch. Posted a 2.12 pop time in-game with accuracy in the throw for the out. The uncommitted junior is very capable at the hot corner as well where he's light on his feet and the arm strength really plays.
