Nebraska Spring Preview Pre-Event Notes

Brian Feekin
Nebraska Scouting Director

On Monday, Feb, 18, 2019, Prep Baseball Report Nebraska will be hosting its third annual Nebraska Spring Preview event at the Ultimate Baseball Academy (UBA). This event is one of the most highly anticipated events on the PBR Nebraska calendar as it gives prospects from around the state a platform to showcase their tools leading into the Spring season.

The highest ranked uncommitted prospect headed to UBA on Monday in the 2020 class is Millard North's  Ryan Mendez, the No. 10 ranked prospect in his class. Mendez is a loose-armed, athletic, 6-foot-1, 175 pound right handed pitcher who has been touching 90 mph with his fastball and shown feel for his breaking ball. Ranked right behind Mendez are fellow right handed pitchers Jackson Kraus(Lincoln Southeast) and Michael Finan (Omaha Westside), both have shown advanced feel on the mound during their Sophomore years and look to make a jump going into the 2019 season. The top ranked 2020 hitter at the event is also a Millard North product with 1B/OF, Tommy Roland. A dual sport athlete, the  6-foot-4 220 pounds Rolland runs well for his size and possess easy power for the left side.

Some other notable uncommitted 2020s poised to impress on Monday: Laif Hultine (RHP, Hastings), Cole Whitehill (LHP, Papillion LaVista), Trevor Barajas (OF/1B, Omaha Westside), Eric Anderson (C, Bellevue West), Calen Protastkey (C, Creighton Prep) and Preston Menicucci (RHP, Millard West)

The highest ranked uncommitted 2021 prospects that will be in attendance are Brady Bell (Lincoln East) and Jackson Brockett (Elkhorn South). Bell, ranked #4 in the 2021 class is an above average athlete behind the plate and can run his fastball into the mid 80's on the mound. Brockett, ranked #6, has shown advanced pitch-ability with his three pitch mix, clean easy actions on the mound and continues to develop physically.

Jackson Brockett

Not to be forgotten, there are plenty of talented prospects on the roster ready to make a name for themselves.  Traditionally, there will be a high level arm or position player pop up from the work they have put in over the Winter season, similar to 2017 attendee Cameron Wynn (Lincoln High, Johnson County, Texas A&M commit) and 2018 attendee Quinn Mason (Gretna, Nebraska commit).
There are sure to be plenty of others prospects not mentioned above who will burst onto the scene on Monday.
