McHenry Future Prospects Showcase: Statistical Analysis

The McHenry Future Prospects Showcase & Educational Camp for the 2023 and 2024 graduating classes took place on Sunday, January 27th at Pro Player Academy in McHenry, IL. Over 60 prospects participated in an educational portion as well as a pro-style workout in front of the PBR Illinois Scouting Staff. Today, we start the event analysis with a breakdown of the statistical leaders.  

The future is bright in Northern Illinois as a number of 2023 and 2024 prospects will be ones to watch as they enter high school. Cooper Cohn, who found his name scattered all over the leaderboards below, is one of the better 2023s we have seen to date. Cohn is highly-advanced behind the plate and took one of the more impressive rounds of BP on the day. Cohn has a wiry, athletic frame, moxy in the batter’s box and takes an aggressive, controlled hack.

OF/RHP Brayden and C/OF Ryan Bakes were two other 2023s with bright futures. Brayden was one of the top left-handed hitters in attendance and ran a 4.30 home-to-first.. Brayden has a simple, compact swing with loose hands and present bat speed. He was also up to 80 mph from the outfield and 77 mph on the mound. Ryan, a right-handed hitter, has a thick build, was up to 73 mph from the crouch and has present bat strength.

One of the most complete infielders in attendance was 2023 Joel Richard Nelson. Nelson, has a level bat path that stays through the zone. Defensively, he has athletic defensive actions, soft hands, can play on the move and has plenty of arm to stay on the left-side of the infield. Another infielder to keep an eye on is 2024 Demetrios Angelakos. Angelakos has loose, fast hands with present bat speed from the right-side of the plate and natural infield actions.

Another 2024 bat that made an impression was INF Logan Voelz. Voelz, a long, projectable right-handed hitter, has an easy swing and creates advanced bat speed for his age with power potential. Two 2023’s with easy juice were Parker Schuring and Sheppard Graf. Schuring has a simple, compact swing and the ball jumps off his barrel. Graf looks to do damage to the baseball and stays flat through the zone.

There were a number of others who showed well and will be mentioned in a few weeks when we release the scouting reports from the event in a few weeks.
