A rainy week forced Woodstock and Milton to take their game to LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA. Offense was hard to come by for both teams on a chilly night. The Wolverines of Woodstock manufactured all of their runs in the first inning to take a commanding three run lead. The duo of starting pitcher RHP Michael Burke (2020) and reliever RHP Garrett Goblish (2021) held the Milton offense to just one run on two hits to secure the 3-1 lead on Thursday evening.

The first four batters of the game for Woodstock reached safely, three via walk. The one hit was manufactured by the two-hole hitter DH/OF Preston Gunnell (2021), who took the first pitch of the night he saw and hit a screamer through the left-side of the infield. Milton nearly got out of the inning with the damage kept to just one run, getting two consecutive outs with the bases loaded. However, walks did them in, as they walked in two more runs with two outs before recording the final out of the innning.


For Burke and Woodstock, they kept the Milton offense quiet for the first two innings, allowing only one batter to reach base by way of walk. In the third inning, things started to get interesting. CF Moses Lim (2021) led off with a ground ball to the left-side, but the throw was short hopped and the first baseman could not handle it, allowing Lim to reach base safely. 2B Andrew Vislusky (2022) laid down a perfect bunt and beat out the throw for a single, turning the lineup over. A fielder’s choice, cutting down Visulky at second and a dropped fly ball by center fielder, led to Milton plating their first run and looking for more with men on first and second, one out.

The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs, two batters later, when DH Logan Jones (Samford) drew a walk. In the end though, they could not capitalize as Burke was able to get the next batter to fly out to left field and end the inning.Milton were able to get within striking distance in the fourth inning with men on first and third with two outs, but once again, Burke hunkered down and got a fly out to left field to end the inning.

To their credit, Milton was able to stifle the Woodstock offense for the five innings after their three run first inning, using five different pitchers. Most notably was the appearance of freshman RHP Luke McNeillie (2023). The youngster entered in the fourth inning and immediately looked like he belonged. With little effort in his delivery and a clean arm action, he worked his fastball up to 84 mph and dropped in an 11/5 curveball at 67 mph, collecting two strikeouts and one ground out in his single inning.

Woodstock reliever, Goblish, slammed the door shut on Milton over the final three innings of play. The right-hander sat in the low-80s with his fastball, challenging the Eagles with the pitch, and then would drop in a nice curveball at 66-68 mph. Goblish collected five strikeouts, while allowing no hits and walking three batters, to earn the save and the victory for his team.
