Blessed Trinity vs. Cambridge
February 11, 2020
It seemed we had a pitching duel on our hands Tuesday night between Cambridge’s Casey Young (Gardner-Webb commit) and Blessed Trinity’s Dominick Marcoccio (Wofford commit). They were back and forth the first 2 innings until Blessed Trinity’s Evan Bilson shot one over the first baseman’s head to give them a 2 run lead. Young competed in the zone for 3.2 innings of work, despite some uncharacteristic mistakes by the Cambridge defense. Young’s fastball was up to 87 with good arm side run. He settled in at 83-85 as the game progressed. He had a good breaking ball to keep the Blessed Trinity hitters guessing, but the high-powered offense capitalized off mistakes by the defense.
Dominick Marcoccio showed some electric stuff in his debut start for Blessed Trinity. He controlled the game for 3.1 innings of work. Tallying up five strikouts, two hits, and zero earned runs. He forced contact, and used the slider at any time in the count. That type of off-speed command will get him on the mound quickly at Wofford.

In the top of the 3rd the Bears began to threaten with runners in scoring position. Uncommitted senior, Aiden McSherry took over for Marcoccio. McSherry walked Grayson Dato to give the Bears some life, but he was able to buckle down and strike out the next two to get the Titans out of a jam. His fastball worked up 87, and competed down in the zone.
Freshman Jake Lankie (Georgia commit) took over for McSherry in the top of the 4th. He gave the Titans a quick inning with two strikouts, and got them back in the dugout to let the offense go to work. With rain coming down, Lankie was up to 86 with a tight slider that gave the Bears trouble. The freshman looked like a veteran with a smooth and confident delivery.
Evan Bilson took care of the Titans offense early in the game scoring the first 3 runs. Senior Trey Baker (Northwest Florida commit) supplied the life for the big inning for the Titans in the bottom of the 5th. He got things going with a 3B off the top of the right field wall. Junior Auburn commit, D.J. Radtke followed that up with a hard hit ball to 3B to score Baker.
The Titans would go on to take the season opener 10-0. Both teams will be contenders in their respective regions this high school season. Blessed Trinity ran out 3 above average arms that will be hard for teams to beat. The offense looked like they were in mid-season form as well rallying off 11 hits. Cambridge looks to bounce back against Starr’s Mill this Friday in the GDC tournament at LakePoint. Blessed Trinity will also travel to LakePoint on Friday to face off against North Paulding.
