GA Power 25: Week 2

The second week of the 2021 season is down, and we have quite a bit of movement in the Power 25. The second week of the season gave us some nicer weather, which meant plenty of games were played around the state. We got a better sense of who the contenders are, but there are still some questions that need answering.

From now on, throughout the high school season, each and every Monday we will be updating the GA Power 25. We will be tracking the progress of schools and giving you the top headlines from the previous week, As the weather gets warmer, the top-25 will likely look different than it does today, especially when May rolls around.

Here are the top headlines coming out of the second week of the season, Feb. 22 to 28.

Top Three Remain Unchanged

+ No. 1 Buford (5-0) - The Wolves took care of business over the week with a two game sweep of Shiloh. They outscored their opponent 19-0. RHP Dylan Lesko (2022; Vanderbilt) tossed a five inning no-hitter in the series. Buford travels to Hoover this weekend where they are scheduled to play PBR Alabama 6A No. 1 Hartselle and PBR Alabama 7A No. 10 Thompson, plus two additional games with opponents to be named.

+ No. 2 Houston County (6-1) - The Bears remain at No. 2 after a 3-1 week. They split a series against PBR Alabama 6A No. 1 Hartselle, and then took games against Veterans and Locust Grove. HoCo has some time off before they are back in action on Friday. It will be a challenging weekend schedule with one against Campbell on Friday and a doubleheader against Parkview on Saturday.

+ No. 3 Carrollton (8-0) - Carrollton is playing like an unstoppable force right now and has not lost a game since 2019! They took care of St. Pius X in a mid week game and then had some close calls at the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament, but good teams know how to win and that is what the Trojans did. Carrollton travels to Hoover, AL this weekend for four games. They open up on Thursday with double header against PBR Alabama 6A No. 2 Helena and Daphne (AL). The Trojans will have two additional games on Friday and Saturday with opponents to be named.

Movin’ On Up

+ No. 4 North Oconee (7-0) - It was a huge week for the Titans as they jumped from No. 7 to No. 4. North Oconee started the week off by defeating Forsyth Central 9-4. Then it was a mid-week mega matchup at Starr’s Mill. We were on-hand to see the No. 4 Starr’s Mill take on No. 7 North Oconee, at the time. RHP/SS Bubba Chandler (2021; Clemson) and 1B Phillip Ard (2021) propelled the Titans past the Panthers 8-2, you can read the game recap HERE. North Oconee made it a 4-0 week with wins over Jeff Davis and Richmond Hill over the weekend.

+ No. 6 Winder-Barrow (5-0) - The Bulldogs are off to a perfect start and have gotten through their opponents pretty handedly. Their closest call was on Wednesday when they pulled out a 7-6 win over Peachtree Ridge. Other than that, they have been outscoring their opponents 2-to-1, averaging eight runs a game. They have another game against Peachtree Ridge on Tuesday and then host No. 13 Greenbrier on Friday.

+ No. 9 Pope (6-1) - The Greyhounds are a hair away from being undefeated this season with the only blemish on their record a 1-0 loss to Whitewater in Week 1. Since then, Pope has been on a tear. The offense has scored 37 runs during the four game win streak and the pitching has held opponents to an average of two runs per game. The Greyhounds look to be rolling, but they will be tested with a busy week. They host four games this week, two against Etowah, one against Milton and then wrap up the week with South Forsyth on Friday.

+ No. 12 Grayson (5-0) - Making the biggest leap in our rankings is the Grayson Rams, as they go from No. 22 to No. 12.  The Rams picked up a big win against No. 18 Flowery Branch, and then took down two bubble teams in South Forsyth and Lowndes over the weekend. Grayson takes on Mill Creek for the second time this season on Tuesday. Then, they are away at Hillgrove, who are on the bubble in the Power 25, on Friday, and travel to No. 23 Wesleyan on Saturday.

Newcomers

+ No. 15 Marist (6-1) - The War Eagles have made a huge statement since dropping their opening game to Denmark 4-2. They have rattled off consecutive wins against Mill Creek, Lambert, Hillgrove, Jefferson, No. 8 Loganville and Parkview. In the process, they captured the Georgia Peach Tournament Championship, defeating both hosts. The War Eagles will gear up for a three game series against No. 11 Blessed Trinity over the weekend. I think it is safe to say this will be the series of the week in the state of Georgia.

+ No. 24 Cambridge (6-1) - The Bears are another newcomer who has rattled off six straight wins after dropping their season opener to North Springs 8-2. The offense has been the key to their success, averaging nearly 10 runs per game in their current six game win streak. The Bears get into region play this week with a three game set against Riverwood.
