2023 PBR Future Games MV-Pitcher: Eston Simpson

Eston Simpson used the summer and fall of 2022 to claw his way into the top-100 rankings on PBR Georgia’s Class of 2025 board – and there’s no signs of him slowing down, now almost a full year later.

Today, we're announcing Simpson as the recipient of the 2023 PBR Future Games Most Valuable Pitcher award, following his dominant two-inning performance in Team Georgia's second game, under the lights, versus Team Indiana.

Simpson's starpower has been burning brighter and brighter since this time last year, however.

In PBR Georgia’s May update to the state rankings, Simpson catapulted himself further up the board following some buzz generated in the winter that carried over into the spring for his high school program at Jefferson. He showed pitchability that went beyond his years for the Dragons, especially in the early spring look that PBR Georgia scouting director, Hudson Graham, witnessed against North Hall. In that late February outing, Simpson through and around some threats, demonstrating a level of poise that’s not too common for underclassmen tasked with competing inside one of the country’s toughest varsity baseball environments, in Georgia.

He finished his sophomore season at Jefferson with a 3.45 ERA over 44.2 innings and he punched out 38 batters over that span.

The 6-foot-6 righty ticked a ton of those intangible traits that are hard to come by, and the physical projection combined with his present stuff only raised his ceiling that much higher.

That brings us to early June, when Graham and the PBR Georgia staff got an updated look at Simpson, at the Top Prospect Games. Expecting to be impressed by Simpson’s arsenal and upside, the Jefferson prep product still managed to overdeliver, somehow. At that event, Simpson demonstrated that same ol’ pitchability and poise, and all the while his velocity was ticking up quicker than anticipated. He reached an 88.9 mph high with the fastball at that showcase, one that leaves a lower slot yet that helps it generate hard arm-side action, though it still carries well through the zone.

Graham was excited knowing that Simpson was going to be a member of Team Georgia’s squad at the PBR Future Games in late July, but that excitement doubled following that gains the spindly right-hander showed in early June.

“I knew Simpson was going to be one of our Future Games arms when I saw him in early spring,” Graham said. “But when he showed up to Top Prospect Games in June, he looked like a different pitcher and immediately knew he was going to make a splash down there.”

He dominated this summer for his travel club, Devine Baseball, with 33 Ks against just three walks in 33 innings and he only allowed eight earned runs.

Fast-forward to the Future Games, Simpson had successfully earned himself a ton of eager onlookers in anticipation of his outing against a sturdy Team Indiana squad that was set to take place under the lights at LakePoint on July 28. Simpson was selected to take the ball first in Team Georgia’s second game, scheduled to pitch two innings against Indiana, and he was more than prepared for the spotlight.

From PBR Georgia’s Game Two Quick Hits: “Handled possibly the best talent he’s faced perfectly, literally. Simpson went perfect through both innings he pitched with three Ks. An arm that is easy to love. Long, athletic frame that will handle the next level well at 6-foot-6, 180 pounds. Displayed a show of dominance and mound presence. Builds pace gradually and creates angle with his long build and ¾ arm slot. Well-sequenced with coil. Smooth, loose full-circle arm action. Fastball had some run, going 86-88 that he located wherever he wanted with a curveball he threw in occasionally, running 71-73. Pitchability was displayed very well, and his ceiling his endless. A projectability as high as his will be a must-follow and proved everything we saw in him this summer in this outing, gaining the attention of many.”

Those three punch-outs across his pair of perfect frames signaled his present talent levels and his obvious projection remains intact, promoting one of the highest ceilings among those who pitched at this year’s Future Games, earning Simpson the Most Valuable Pitcher award in the process.
