2021 ACC Recruiting Classes

Nathan Rode and Shooter Hunt

ACCPrep Baseball Report is conducting its annual review of recruiting classes, in which Nathan Rode and Shooter Hunt evaluate the current senior talent committed to programs in each of the Power Five conferences, as well as notable mid-majors—or as we like to call them, Power Majors—and the draft risk each of those classes carry. Numbers in the charts below denote where players are ranked in the 2021 Overall Rankings.

BOSTON COLLEGE

450 Sean Hard RHP St. Joseph's Montvale NJ

Boston College

OVERVIEW: The Eagles have just one recruit in the Overall Rankings, Hard, who provides some upside with his arm strength and natural athleticism on the mound. He showed a low-90s fastball this summer and has room for more in his 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame. Boston College dipped into the New Jersey talent pool a fair amount, snagging four of the state’s top 25 prospects including Hard. MIF Christopher Markovich (Immaculata HS, NJ) has a simple swing and solid infield actions, though he could wind up seeing time at third base or in the outfield. LHP Matt Nunan (Ocean City HS, NJ) has an easy, clean delivery with a quick arm. RHP Eric Schroeder (Delbarton HS, NJ) has sat in the mid 80s in the past and can mix in two swing-and-miss breaking balls. Sourcing locally, the Eagles have RHP Luke Delongchamp (Saint Peter-Marian HS, MA) and 3B Sam McNulty (Milton Academy, MA) coming from Massachusetts. Delongchamp was sitting in the mid 80s before the spring shutdown and McNulty has a smooth stroke with some strength at contact from the right side. Overall, there is a quality collection of upside pieces with talent to mold, something that tends to succeed in Chestnut Hill.

DRAFT RISK: Low. Projectable Northeast arms always get a look from scouts and Hard fits that category, but Boston College figures to get this whole group to campus.

CLEMSON

6 Joe Mack C Williamsville East NY
24 Will Taylor OF Dutch Fork SC
111 Rocco Reid LHP Greenville SC
118 Roy Chandler RHP North Oconee GA
195 Aries Samek SS Teaneck NJ
199 Billy Amick 3B P27 Academy SC
284 BJ Williams RHP Georgia Premier Academy GA
316 David Lewis 3B Blue Ridge SC
349 Casey Tallent RHP Hart County GA

ClemsonOVERVIEW: This class has depth with some high-end talent on both sides of the ball. Mack would contribute to the middle of the lineup right away, whether he suits up behind the dish or not, thanks to his left-handed power and feel for the barrel. Taylor has dual-sport potential as a slot receiver, but he’s a baseball player first and a dynamic athlete. Reid is a polished southpaw with feel for spin and a competitive nature. Chandler has tremendous upside with a big arm, and he doubles as a quarterback, though there doesn’t figure to be an opening there for the Tigers for a little while, so he’s likely a baseball-first recruit like Taylor. Samek has loud tools with bat-to-ball skills and Amick shouldn't take long to be an offensive force for the Tigers. Tallent is athletically built and can run his fastball up to 90, while Lewis has some serious right-handed thump.

DRAFT RISK: High. Clemson is no stranger to losing recruits to pro ball, though they have made out pretty well the last couple years. Mack and Taylor could easily be gone in the top two rounds and Chandler and Reid have enough upside to at least make the coaches sweat in the spring. If the Tigers lose those top two, but get the rest, consider it a win. Much of the strength of this class hinges on the top guys, but there is draft concern throughout.
