On Wednesday our Florida Scouting staff updated the 2015 Florida rankings. We will take a look at some of the risers and new additions to our top 100.
Risers
Tristan McKenzie makes the jump from the no. 4 spot in our rankings into the no. 2 spot. McKenzie has impressed early on this spring as not only one of the top arms in the state of Florida, but also one of the top arms in the country. He has seen a velocity increase early on in the year working effortlessly 90-94 mph with his fastball. This jump has seen him raise his draft stock into the top 2 rounds. Here is his scouting report from earlier this month.
2/10/15 - Young, lean body and smooth, clean mechanics with very good rm action for outstanding projection. Tonight had an effortless FB up to 94 mph. The ball jumps out of his hand and gets on the hitter very quickly. Has very good angle. FB lives at the bottom of the zone. There's deception and a lot of life at the plate. The CV was tight with depth, and the CH had solid action. He's very loose and very fast, so there's some inconsistency to the release point, but this pitcher is super athletic, flexible, and coordinated. At minimum, the stuff will be plus, and the cleanliness and projection will allow for potentially plus command. He rose to the occasion last night and put himself in contention for consideration at the top of the draft.
Another riser in the rankings is Brady Singer up from no. 20 to the no. 12 slot in our rankings. Singer has benefited from a velocity increase this spring working 90-94 up from 88-92 this winter, and projects for more. Singer has a tall, projectable frame and competes on the mound pounding the zone. He has climbed his way up draft boards with his stuff and makeup and will be in consideration for the top 5 rounds come June.
Revelations
Two new additions to the Florida top 100 are Dominican born right-handed pitchers Hector Moreta, checking in at no. 36, and Luis Rodriguez coming in at no. 37. Moreta and Rodriguez enrolled this fall at Calusa Prep in Miami. Both pitchers show big time velocity, good bodies, and strong arms. Moreta features a fastball in the mid 90s and Rodriguez has been working 90-93 this spring. Although both are considered raw on the mound their pure velocity will keep them on scouts radars this spring.
