Underclass Invitational Showcase: Pitching Analysis

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Wisconsin/Illinois

The January Underclass Invitational Showcase was one of the best overall showings of young talent that this event has seen. After reviewing player videos, notes and stats we have compiled our lists of top positional players which we will unveil all week.

The pitchers were impressive to say the least, a trio of big arms highlight the top of the list. We’ve seen RHP Brenden Heiss three times over the span of a month and every time he has been equally impressive. This time Heiss reached his highest velocity touching 92 mph on his first pitch. Sitting 90-91 mph Heiss has incredible arm strength for his age with the potential to have a plus fastball. RHP Drake Fellows, who is the No.1 prospect in the state, showed how easily his arm works. In the middle of basketball season the 6-foot-5, 185-pound righty sat 85-86 mph with almost no effort. Notre Dame commit, RHP Anthony Holubecki, rounded out the trio of flame throwers sitting 89-90 mph every pitch.

Here’s a look at the top pitching prospects.

Top Pitching Prospects

1. Brenden Heiss, RHP, Jacobs HS, 2016
One of the premier power arms in Midwest, if not nation. Athletic 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame, wide shoulders, proportional strength. Set Illinois Underclass Invitational five-year record by topping out at 92 mph. Fastball sat 90-91 mph throughout bullpen session with late arm-side life. Advanced arm speed, long, loose, athletic arm action, high ¾ slot, ball explodes out of hand. Achieves velocity without much effort; likely more in tank. Secondary stuff consists of palm ball and changeup. Palm ball has sharp, erratic action – some have more slider/slurve action, 11/5 steep break; others had late 12/6 dive – either way, pitch ranged between 70-72 mph and has true swing-and-miss potential at next level. Throws pitch with conviction. Changeup ranged between 76-78 mph, has tendency to slow down arm action and get underneath pitch. In all, Heiss should quickly become one of the most coveted right-handed pitching prospects in Midwest. Electric overall stuff.

2. Drake Fellows, RHP, Joliet Catholic, 2016
In basketball season, threw one of his first bullpens of the year, working at 70%. No. 1 2016 prospect in the state. Excellent frame, 6-foot-5, 185-pound frame, long limbs, highly projectable. Easy delivery, fluid, works online, front side coils, shoulders stay closed, athletic finish. Arm is loose, easy effort, high ¾ slot. Fastball sat easy 84-86 mph, heavy action, showed command, late finish. Slider has sweep, 10/4 action, excellent feel, 73-74 mph. Change up flashed sink, 72-76 mph. Fellows is a Vanderbilt commit. In one of his first preseason bullpens Fellows worked easily with little effort. There is a lot more in the tank for Fellows and we will be sure to follow his first varsity season this spring with the Hiltoppers.

3. Anthony Holubecki, RHP, Kaneland, 2016
Long thin athletic frame, long legs, 6-foot-3, 190-pound right handed pitcher, typical pitchers frame, projects well. Works from the stretch only, up tempo delivery, high ¾ arm slot, loose arm action advanced arm speed. Lively fastball sat 89-90 mph every pitch. Breaking ball showed signs of improvement, slider sat 67-69 mph, some decelerated arm action but increased action. Action worked between 11/5 and 10/4 tilt, occasionally showed well above average depth. Changeup flashed arm side run, 74-76 mph, looks to have more confidence. Notre Dame commit, one of the top prospects in the region, electric arm with high potential.

4. Brady Huffman, RHP, Genoa-Kingston HS, 2016
High-level right-handed pitching prospect. Highly projectable, wiry 6-foot-2, 160-pound frame, long legs and arms, plenty of room to physically develop. Arm works quickly and cleanly with little effort, high-3/4 slot, short arm action, athletic delivery, repeats well. Throws three pitches with confidence and for strikes. Fastball sat 85-86 mph, all strikes, with late life; more velocity to come as he physically develops. Curveball is advanced pitch; 71-73 mph with sharp, late 12/6 bite; throws pitch with conviction, commands pitch. Throws changeup in 73-75 range with similar arm action of fastball, keeps pitch knees and below. As Huffman grows into frame and physically develops, he has potential to become high-level pitching prospect in Midwest.

5. Joe Santoro, OF/SHP, Carmel Catholic, 2016
5-foot-10, 165-pound, athletic, left handed hitting, two way player. He is a unique prospect who pitches effectively with both arms. Defensively showed athletic actions, solid hands, and quick, fluid footwork. Arm works long and loose, from a high ¾ slot with accuracy and solid carry at 87 mph. Ran a 7.26 60. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with smooth loading action, short stride, and quality balance through contact. Swing is solid with above average bat speed and barrel whip. Showcased power from gap-to-gap. Exit velocity was 94 mph off a tee. On the mound he throws with both his left arm and right arm. As a LHP, his delivery has smooth rhythm and easy effort. Changeup was 70-72 mph with cut. As a RHP his delivery is rhythmic and easy. Arm works long and loose from a high ¾ slot. Showed feel for his fastball, sitting 82-83 mph with solid arm side run. Throws a true curveball with 11/5 shape, quality depth, and sharp bite at 64-71 mph. Changeup was 69-70 mph.

6. Austin Galindo, RHP/OF, Normal University, 2016
6-foot-6, 220-pound two-way player, advanced frame, broad shoulders, partially filled out. Galindo has a big arm making it hard not to project him on the mound. His delivery lacks some timing but arm is quick and long, working out of a ¾ arm slot. Fastball showed run, topped out at 88 mph, sat between 83-85 mph. Curveball shows sweeping action on 11/5 plane, flat action, 68-70 mph, could be better suited for a slider. Changeup sits 70-72 mph, touched 76, down in the zone, little action. Offensively hits out of a slightly crouched setup. Bat shows power, likes to lift the baseball, posted 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Curveball shows excellent potential, tight hard action, thrown with conviction, highly aggressive, 70-72 mph, fastball arm action. Changeup also thrown aggressively with fastball arm action, sinking action thrown for strikes, advanced feel. Peterson’s secondary stuff has plus potential due to his aggressive arm action. One of the top left handed pitchers in the state Peterson should be a highly coveted prospect in his class.
