Under Armour Classic: Day 3 Notebook

By PBR Staff

BRADENTON, FL—The final day of action at the 2016 Under Armour Classic included a championship showdown between the Louisiana Knights and MSI-Bubba Baseball. With a timely double from 2019 C Kade Shannon (Oak Grove HS, MS) and a combined shutout from RHPs K.C. Hunt (Ramapo HS, NJ), J.C. Parker (Thompson HS, AL) and Will Ripoll (George Ranch HS, TX), the Knights won 1-0. We’ll have more on that game in a separate post. Here are some notes on the remaining consolation games…

Elite Squad 13, GRB Rays 5

Five hitters had multi-hit games as the Elite Squad broke open a back-and-forth game late to capture a 13-5 win over the GRB Rays to claim third place at the event.

+ 2018 Julio Cortez (American Heritage HS, FL) went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, run scored and five RBIs to pace the Elite Squad offensive attack.

+ 2018 IF Kevin Maura (Gulliver Prep, FL) also had a big day at the plate for the Elite Squad going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

+ 2019 Miami recruit 1B/RHP Triston Casas (American Heritage HS, FL) stands out before the game even starts with his physical 6-foot-5, 240-pound frame. In his first at bat of the game, the left-hand hitter launched a loud fly ball out to centerfield showing impressive bat speed and exit velocity. He also collected a line drive single to right field and scored twice. We also got a glimpse of what Casas is capable of on the mound in the seventh inning as he challenged the GRB hitters with an 87-90 mph fastball, touching 91, while flashing a sharp 74-76 mph slider as he recorded the final three outs of the game.

+ 2018 IF Colten Schild (Fox Valley Lutheran HS, WI) led off for GRB and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

+ 2019 IF Dylan Krumrei (Oshkosh North HS, WI) went 2-for-2 with a double to right-center field and line drive single to center, driving in two runs for GRB.

+ 2018 IF Jack Riley (Stillman Valley HS, IL) went 2-for-2 with a walk, two singles and a run scored for GRB.

Dulins Dodgers 5, Toronto Mets 2

Leading 3-1 in the fifth inning, the Dulins Dodgers plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull ahead of the Toronto Mets 5-1 and held on to pick up a 5-2 win.

+ The Dodgers starting pitcher was 2018 RHP John Langworthy (Siegal HS, TN), a Louisville recruit. He threw four strong innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out two. The physical 6-foot-1, 198-pound righty worked 82-85 mph with his fastball, topping out at 87. He showed a controllable 12/6 curveball at 67-68 mph and a shorter 11/5 breaking ball at 75-77 mph while mixing in a 70-72 mph changeup.

+ The star of the game was Dodgers 2018 OF Eli Davis (Brighton HS, TN), a left-handed hitter who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and four stolen bases. The athletic, 5-foot-11, 160-pound Davis showed a solid offensive skill set and noticeable aggressiveness at the plate and on the bases. He also tossed two scoreless innings in relief demonstrating an easy arm and simple, athletic delivery. His fastball was clocked at 75-79 mph, topping out at 81 and he has feel for a curveball at 64-67 mph and changeup at 66-68 mph.

+ The Mets 2018 RHP Sam Jones is an interesting prospect to follow. He has a lanky, projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 145 pounds. He showed an easy delivery and clean arm action, but lacks present strength and body control. Jones threw 2.2 scoreless innings, showing a 75-77 mph fastball, topping out at 79, and 65-66 mph curveball. There is more in the tank velocity-wise as he begins to fill out his rangy 6-foot-3 frame.

Top Tier 4, FTB 3

Top Tier pulled out the victory to finish 4-1 on the tournament. Top Tier threw four quality arms at FTB, and scored the decisive run in the sixth inning after 2018 C Chase Stanke (Marmion HS, IL) led off the inning with a double and later scored on an error.

+ 2018 OF Austin Ehren (Carmel Catholic HS, IL) continued to swing a hot bat for Top Tier, finishing 2-for-3 with a run-scoring single and a run.

+ 2018 OF Dakota Kotowski (Providence HS, IL) was one of the most impressive hitters at the event, and he continued to show why, as the solidly built 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitter delivered two more hits and a RBI in the first inning.

+ LHP Sean Sinisko (Aurora Central Catholic HS, IL), a 6-foot-4, 210-pounder, continued to elevate his stock in his second appearance for Top Tier. The wide-shouldered left-hander threw well in two innings, including striking out the side in the first behind an 82-83 mph fastball and 68-71 mph slider.

+ 2018 OF Tyler Acosta (Barrington HS, IL) has a lean, athletic build. He showed some range and the ability to go back on the ball in center field during the game. At the plate, he’s balanced in the box and hung in the count by fouling off pitches with two strikes and also doubled down the left-field line.

+ 2018 3B Dylan Buck (Lakewood Ranch HS, FL) has a lean build and makes the plays at third base while showing an accurate arm. He’s relaxed at the plate with some quick bat speed and had an RBI single to left field. He is committed to West Virginia.

+ 2018 OF Jacob Young (Ponte Vedra HS, FL) has a lean, wiry frame with some quick twitch actions. He showed some good range, a quick first step, and tracked the ball while playing center field. He has a quick swing and singled into right field during the game.

+ 2017 C Luis Rodriguez (Celebration HS, FL) has a short, stocky and solid build with a thicker lower half. He has a pull-side approach from the left side and singled in the game.

+ 2018 SS Blaze Alexander (Bishop Verot HS, FL) is lean, athletic and projectable. He displays smooth actions, soft hands, charges the ball and reads hops well. His arm is strong and accurate with carry across the diamond. He is committed to South Carolina.

Ohio Elite 5, Georgia Titans 3

Despite only three hits on the day, Ohio Elite took advantage of five errors from the Georgia Titans to score three runs in the sixth inning to win 5-3.

+ 2018 C/OF/1B Nolan Clegg (Toronto HS, OH) showed a short level swing with good balance producing one hit and a sacrifice fly to right field.

+ 2018 RHP Tristin Siemer (Bishop Ready HS, OH) had a short, quick arm action with a fastball ranging from 81-85 mph and a slider with tight spin and depth that ranged from 69-71 mph.

+ 2018 LHP Wesley Widner (Grissom HS, AL) went 5.2 innings, allowing only two runs on three hits while striking out three. Widner worked 77-78 mph on his fastball, locating it to both sides of the plate as well as a 65-69 mph breaking ball with some depth that he threw often and for strikes.

+ 2018 C Connor Pavolony (River Ridge HS, GA) showed a balanced, level swing with quick hands and a good bath through the zone, which resulted in three hits on the day including a triple. Behind the plate Pavolony is very flexible and athletic, putting himself in a good position to receive with soft hands. He was consistently a 1.95 to second with a quick transfer, quick feet and a strong accurate arm. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound catcher has room to continue filling out and will be a very interesting catch-and-throw guy with some pop as he gets stronger.

Virginia Cardinals 7, Northeast Baseball 5

Led by 2018 1B Zach Stevens’ (Lexington HS, MA) 2-for-2 performance, Northeast Baseball defeated the Virginia Cardinals 7-5.

+ 2018 OF Ryan Cervone (Lexington HS, MA) had a quality day at the dish, adding two hits and an RBI.

+ 2018 Nick Murray (St. Mark’s HS, NH) added two hits and an RBI as well.

+ 2018 SS Gregory Ryan (Benedictine College Prep, VA), a Pittsburgh recruit, continued to impress by showing a loose right-handed swing and quality defensive abilities. He made a tough play on the run and added a double.

+ 2018 IF Scott McDonough (Mills Godwin, VA) has a projectable 6-foot-3 frame. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 on the day, including a loud RBI triple.
