The 2017 National High School Invitational took place last week and as expected had no shortage of high-level baseball. Orange Lutheran HS, CA, won the title over Dana Hills HS, CA. It was Orange Lutheran’s third trip to the event and they are the fifth California team to win in six years. Tons of scouts poured into the event with some of the country’s top draft prospects on display. There were many notable performances at the NHSI and this week’s Hotlist highlights some of those—taking stats and competitive situations into consideration.
Mason Denaburg, RHP/C, Merritt Island HS, FL (2018)
Scouts followed Merritt Island around intently, watching Denaburg’s teammate in SS Brady McConnell, and got a glimpse of what they’ll see in 2018. Not only did he go 6-for-12 with a double and seven runs scored, he also dominated in his start on the mound. He started out 89-92 mph with his fastball, settling into the high 80s, and showed advanced feel for a changeup with sink and fade at 79-82. He also mixed in a slider at 75-77. He pitched six innings, allowing three hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out 11. He is committed to Florida.
