Standouts From Sarasota

By Mike Maerz
Director of Florida Operations/Area Scout

This past weekend in Sarasota, I was able to watch some of the top 2017 teams from Florida, which included the Orlando Scorpions 2017 Prime and Florida Burn 2017 Platinum. Both teams have Division I recruits riddled throughout their roster, which includes some of the top arms and bats in the country for their class.

Below are three players who stood out over the weekend while the rest of the scouting notes from Sarasota will be available to view in the 2016 Florida Summer Scout Blog.

Dalton Wingo, OF, Plant City HS (2017)
Uncommitted junior currently ranked No. 66 in the Florida 2017 class, No. 223 overall. Athletic, strong, projectable build standing at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. Showed the ability to come in and go back on the ball well while playing center field. Tracks the ball. At the plate, Wingo displayed extension and quick hands. Gets a good leg kick for timing and rhythm and shows good hand-eye as he can square the ball up. Had a hard line drive into the left-center field gap for a triple and a line-drive single up the middle during the game off of mid to high 80s pitching. Aggressive runner on the base paths with instincts.

Jack Leftwich, RHP, TNXL Academy (2017)
Wake Forest recruit. Currently ranked No. 70 in the Florida 2017 class, No. 231 overall. Strong, solid, durable build on a 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame. Has added about 10-15 pounds of muscle since we last saw him. Live arm out of the high-3/4 arm slot throwing on a downward tilt. Repeats well and stays on line. Threw a heavy fastball with good movement and tailing action that sat 87-89 mph and touched 90 mph a couple times. Keeps the ball low in the zone. Slider sat 78-81 mph with depth. Strong follow this summer.

Jose Ciccarello, SS, Alonso HS (2017)
Florida recruit. Currently ranked No. 21 in the Florida 2017 class, No. 57 overall. Athletic, strong build on a 5-foot-10, 175-pound frame. Displays good actions and lateral quickness in the field with soft hands. Shows range, reads the hops, and charges the ball. Throws are on line and accurate with carry. Quick, loose hands with above-average bat speed at the plate. Quiet in the box. Ball jumps off his bat and shows good plate discipline. Uses all parts of the field. High baseball IQ and natural instincts.
