St. Thomas Aquinas Continues Its Winning Ways

St. Thomas Aquinas won their regional semi-final game last Tuesday in unusual fashion by a score of 4-2. One reason they won, and why they have been winning all spring, is due to the play of outfielder Jawuan Harris. In Tuesday’s regional semi-final game, he was 2-for-2 with four stolen bases, three runs scored, and hit the eventual winning home run to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning.
At the beginning of the spring, Harris was most notably known as a star football player on his way to Rutgers as a wide receiver, known only to a handful of major league scouts at the beginning of the season. He’s no longer under the radar, but rather a guy being considered in this year’s draft. He has big time athleticism with plus speed. He has some crudeness to his game but only plays baseball half of the year, which is unusual these days for a high school baseball player in Florida. He flashes instincts with the bat and especially on the bases. He’s very disruptive and extremely aggressive on the base paths going 44-46 in stolen bases on the year. He has reportedly ran a 6.41 60 yard dash, which is his best tool, but he throws well and has surprising power for his size. He had many D-1 offers in football but his ceiling may be much higher in baseball if he decides to play all year round.
Either way, the crowd of scouts have grown at St. Thomas Aquinas’ games, as Harris has put together a solid year, hitting .458 with three home runs. He is now on the radar and may have a choice to make as his season winds down and the pre-draft workout invitations start to pile up. I always like to see athletes like this give baseball a full time shot. He will always have football to fall back on, and won’t lose the necessary football skills barring any injuries.
St. Thomas Aquinas will take on Royal Palm Beach in the regional final.
