FORT MYERS, FL - Sunday began the playoffs at the World Wood Bat Underclassmen Championship, and with the sun casting a wicked glare off the damp grass at Field 3 of Jet Blue Player Development Park, Show Baseball New England and the Central Florida Gators squared off in a pitchers duel with the squad from New England earning a 3-0 victory. Uncommitted 2018 LHP Steve Hajjar (Central Catholic HS, MA) was absolutely dominant striking out 12 batters while yielding just one hit and walk throughout his complete game shutout (7 innings).
Hajjar is physically gifted 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-hander with broad shoulders and long limbs. With a slight hunch in his shoulders as he drives towards the plate, and has some effort out front that has a bit of “funk” which makes it difficult to hit. He hides the ball well, aided by a 3/4 arm slot that appears to jump right out of his lead glove that is extended towards the plate. Hajjar maintained a fastball that sat 82-84 with arm side run down in the zone, and bumped 86 multiple times when he needed something extra. He also mixed in a slider (71-72) that he buried at the back leg of righties. The outing was made ever more impressive being that he was facing an impressive Gators lineup. While his big body, and left arm are attractive to recruiters, his ability to compete on the day should make him even more enticing moving forward. ...
