On The Cusp Frontline Recruits
February 2, 2018
This week, On the Hunt checks out six prospects who will be shooting up recruiting boards this spring. Five of the players are 2020-grads including a physical, power-hitting first baseman along with two left-handed and two right-handed pitchers. The final player is an intriguing two-way prospect in the 2019 class who features a smooth left-handed swing, and may have a chance to compete for innings as a southpaw, as well. Players included are from Florida, Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin.
Xavier Moronta OF / LHP / Somerset Academy, FL / 2019Rankings StateRank: 73 / POS: 10
After a strong showing at a recent event in which Moronta showcased his ability at the plate, in the field, and on the mound, he appears to be on the verge of taking off as a recruit. Currently 5-foot-11, 170-pounds, and showing signs of more physical maturation in the future, Moronta exhibits feel for the barrel from the left side. He rocks he weight onto the back side with a knee-knock leg hang as his hands separate down and back before fluently working level through the zone with a high, two-handed finish. Moronta demonstrates the ability to stroke line drives to both gaps while remaining balanced and in control at all times. He has quick hands, and his barrel shows some lag through the zone. An efficient outfielder, Moronta takes crisp routes to balls while displaying confidence in his hands with athletic movements throughout. Even more interesting to consider is the fact that the strong-armed, left-hander showcased a mid-eighties fastball that should creep up a few ticks higher later in the spring. This could make him an intriguing two-way prospects for some schools. Overall, given his fluent swing and athleticism, expect college recruiters to monitor Moronta closely throughout the spring. |
