SS Matthew Morales (Wellington HS, 2015) received the Area Code Baseball Training Camp Grit award last Tuesday. The Grit award, sponsored by New Balance, is an award given to the player at the camp, that best exemplifies Leadership, Competitive Intensity, and the willingness to learn. Morales' skills and abilities as a baseball player are well known in the West Palm Beach community, but add to that the intangibles recognized by Area Code Baseball, and you start to understand what makes him the caliber of player that he is.
Morales is a smaller-framed live athletic body with very smooth actions and soft hands at SS. That along with a plus arm makes him one of the better SS in the South Florida area. The Stetson University commit also shows a very good approach at the plate with good balance and a good path. He has good hand eye with some quickness in his hands. Known more for his defense right now, his bat will continue to improve with physical strength. He is also a plus runner, which is making him more attractive to ML scouts.
Morales comes from a baseball family. His older brother (Mitchell), was a standout at Florida Atlantic University and a current minor leaguer in the San Diego Padres organization. His Father (Alex) is a former minor league and college coach and a current scout with the Washington Nationals. It's no surprise that a kid coming from that pedigree would inherit some of those character traits that we all enjoy watching.
