Today, OF Kyle Tucker (Plant HS, FL) was named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year for baseball. According to the Gatorade website, the player of the year is awarded “to high school student-athletes who have achieved athletic excellence in conjunction with high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.”
The Florida commit hit .484-10-27 on the season and also achieved excellence in the classroom with a weighted GPA of 5.33. Tucker will have a decision to make next month on whether he will honor his commitment to the Gators or sign a contract with an MLB club as he is expected to be off the board early. Earlier in the season, Florida Scouting Director Rob Sidwell was on the road to see Tucker and filed this report:
Tall, loose, lean, athletic and projectable body. Similar to Shawn Green. Loose actions with an above average arm. Good reads and routes in outfield. Tracks ball well. Erect stance wit an erect bat. Loose quick bat with a good path. Bat stays in zone a long time with some loft. Easy power now with a lot more to come. Gets foot down early and keeps hands back. Very good hitter's hands. Occasionally gets out front on offspeed stuff, but very aggressive. Was 3-for-3 with a single and two home runs. They got out in a hurry. Five average to plus tools. Should be a high 2015 draft. Committed to Florida.
National Supervisor Nathan Rode was in Florida this April as part of The Rode Show and got video of Tucker hitting one of his 10 home runs on the season. That video can be seen HERE.
