In arguably one of the best playoff matchups of the year, the Calvary Christian Academy Eagles defeated the Calvary Christian Warriors 5-1 as they snapped the Warriors 60 game winning streak and captured the 4A State Title. 2019 RHP Skylar Gonzalez (Calvary Christian Academy, FL) was locked in as he tossed a complete game to earn the win while the 2018 3B Roberto Pena (Calvary Christian Academy, FL) paced the Eagles’ offense, driving in three runs.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off Pena’s bat for an RBI double, Gonzalez went to work. The West Virginia recruit worked with a quick pace and featured a fastball mostly in the 85-86 mph range, touching 87 a few times while mixing in a 75-76 mph slider with depth that he threw for strikes along with a 78-79 mph changeup he threw occasionally. His first two innings went unscathed, but the Warriors were able to tie things up in the bottom of the third on a misplay in the field. That’s all the Warriors would get though, as Gonzalez shut them down the rest of the way.

It remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the top of the fifth when Roberto Pena came through again, this time with the game winning hit. On a 1-2 count, the Florida recruit drove a ball back up the middle and gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead as two runners came across to score.

The Eagles would then tack on two more runs via a hit by pitch and wild pitch with the bases loaded to push their lead to 5-1. Gonzalez continued his dominance over the Warriors lineup for the final three frames before he got the final batter to ground out to second, giving the Eagles the 5-1 victory. His final line came out to seven strikeouts, allowing one run on one walk and scattering four hits.

For the Eagles, this marks the second time in three years they’ve captured the state title. On the other side, the Warriors may have fell short of going back to back, but they were able to put together a 60 game win streak over the past two seasons which is an unbelievable accomplishment.
